The future demand for fish and other aquatic foods requires the sustainable intensification of related production systems. However, policy investment decisions aquaculture systems are hindered by lack benchmarking data on their actual sustainability performance, which often result in poorly developed implemented interventions that ignore potential trade-offs. This is a reality many leading developing country producers like Egypt. In this study we analyzed farm-level from 402 Egypt, to characterize benchmark performance tilapia against key outcomes using combination ordinary least square regressions, simultaneous quantile regressions propensity score matching analytical techniques. We focussed how characteristics practices different intersect with economic, food security, environmental cover multiple dimensions sustainability. found differences these were significantly associated particular, our results show yields monoculture (10,460.5 ton/ha) higher than polyculture (8404.7 ton/ha). Furthermore, despite generally positive several studied systems, some trade-offs emerge both between within dimensions.

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs) have been identified as having high potential for development, attributed to their significant advantages, such higher productivity, reduced water consumption, and improved sustainability. However, increased energy requirements due the amount of recycling temperature control leads operational costs added environmental impacts from use fossil fuels, causing a barrier widespread deployment. This study examines renewable integration with RASs improve financial feasibility, while also presenting an overview its challenges system optimisation modelling, which is presently absent in existing literature. Renewable coupled more efficient practices through process advanced monitoring has make sustainable profitable. offers comprehensive understanding sustainability concerning demands RASs, growth by adopting wider dynamic directions problem-solving using models. The study ascertained the relationship between aquaculture production and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in South Africa. used Autoregressive Distributed Lag—Error Correction Model (ARDL-VECM) with time series data 1990 2020. results showed that mean annual production, GHG emissions, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) period were 5200 tonnes, 412 US$447 billion, respectively. There was a long-run GDP. In short run, had positive GDP negative beef production. Furthermore, there bi-directional emissions. addition, relationship. Beef also concludes is affected tends to affect Aquaculture legislation should consider Africa promote sustainable techniques.

Aquaculture plays an essential role in supplying animal-source food and protein worldwide, this way contributing to several sustainable development goals. Notwithstanding this, the aquaculture sector's long-term environmental sustainability is a major concern due overall impacts. To date, best of authors' knowledge, assessments systems Portugal from perspective, nexus between resource consumption nutrition issues, are still lacking. This study bridges gap by analysing system comprehensive manner applying combining life cycle assessment resources–protein approaches. The results highlight feed as main factor responsible for total impact all categories selected, ranging 74 % 98 %. Climate change 2.88 kg CO2-eq per medium-size fish (functional unit). shows that 504.1 MJex needed obtain 1 edible protein, with high dependency on non-renewable resources (59 %), mainly oil by-product fuels used production. After identifying hotspots, potential strategies be adopted such reduction, eco-certification ecosystem-based management suggested, ensuring production sustainability.

Coastal aquaculture has made an important contribution to global food security and the economic development of coastal zones in recent decades. However, it also damaged these zones’ ecosystems. Moreover, is poised play a key role achievement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Consequently, extracting become crucial valuable. due limitations remote sensing image spatial resolution traditional extraction methods, most research studies focus on areas containing dikes rather than individually separable ponds (ISAPs). This not accurate estimation areas’ true size. In our study, we propose rapid effective object-based method ISAPs. We chose multi-scale segmentation generate semantically meaningful objects for various types land cover, then built decision tree classifier according unique features The results show that can remove small rivers other easily confused features, which thus far been difficult accomplish with conventional methods. obtained overall precision value 85.61% recall 84.04%; compared support vector machine’s (SVM) 78.85% rate 61.21%, demonstrates greater accuracy efficiency. used this test transferability algorithm nearby areas, exceeded 80%. proposed study could provide readily available solution simple efficient ISAPs shows high spatiotemporal transferability.
