Hydrogen energy technologies are forecasted to play a critical supporting role in global decarbonisation efforts, as reflected by the growth of national hydrogen strategies recent years. Notably, UK government published its Strategy August 2021 support targets and security ambitions. While establishing techno-economic feasibility for systems is prerequisite prospective transition, social acceptability also needed visions 'hydrogen economy'. However, date, societal factors yet be embedded into policy prescriptions. Securing acceptance especially context homes', which entails replacing natural gas boilers hobs with low-carbon appliances. Reflecting nascency heating cooking technologies, dynamics explored comprehensive way. Similarly, public perceptions economy emerging remain poorly understood. Given paucity conceptual empirical insights, this study develops an integrated framework tests predictive power using partial least squares structural equation modelling. Results highlight importance risk perceptions, trust dynamics, emotions shaping consumer perceptions. Foremost, prospects deploying homes at scale may rest coupling renewable-based production local environmental socio-economic benefits. Policy prescriptions should embed technological pursuit large-scale, sustainable solutions socially acceptable transition pathways.

Hydrogen-fuelled technologies for home heating and cooking may provide a low-carbon solution decarbonising parts of the global housing stock. For transition to transpire, attitudes perceptions consumers must be factored into policy making efforts. However, empirical studies are yet explore potential levels consumer heterogeneity regarding domestic hydrogen acceptance. In response, this study explores wide spectrum responses towards prospect homes. The proposed is conceptualised in terms 'domestic acceptance matrix', which examined through nationally representative online survey conducted United Kingdom. results draw attention importance interest engagement environmental issues, knowledge awareness renewable energy technologies, early adoption potential, as key drivers Critically, strategic measures should taken convert scepticism pessimism hope optimism by recognising multi-dimensional nature To end, resources dedicated increasing observability trialability homes proximity industrial clusters hubs, where stakes highest. Hydrogen energy technologies are anticipated to play a fundamental role in securing decarbonised future. While the deployment of low-carbon hydrogen systems remains nascent and is subject range techno-economic constraints, potential scalability will also hinge on social acceptance. In response, this study draws extensive national survey data derive comprehensive typology domestic acceptance, which reflects multiple factors influencing consumer attitudes towards heating cooking appliances. The proposed developed through rigorous coding over 1000 qualitative statements, leading 12 core acceptance composed mix positive, neutral, negative sub-factors. finds that eight primary sub-factors account for close 60 % identified codes, with knowledge deficit (negative), environmental benefits (positive), financial risks (negative) ranking highest. Critically, these three most statistically significant predictors heterogeneity. At sub-group level, analysis shows engagement renewable technology climate change associated stronger perceptions lower concerns. By contrast, perceived concerns injustice constrain levels among fuel stressed respondents. Through mixed-methods analysis, transmits value advancing typologies as critical mechanism enacting 'just' economy. supports developing strategic measures heterogeneity better support socially acceptable pathways residential decarbonisation.

As part of its efforts to secure a 'net-zero society', the UK government will take strategic decision on role hydrogen in decarbonising homes within next years. While scholars have recently advanced social science research agenda technology acceptance, studies are yet engage with prospective dynamics adopting 'hydrogen homes'. In response, this study examines perceived adoption potential heating and cooking technologies, as evaluated through eyes consumer. Engaging behavioural market draws data from broadly nationally representative online survey examine influence safety, technological, economic, environmental, emotional factors domestic transition context. The analysis follows multi-stage empirical approach, integrating findings partial least squares structural equation necessary condition crystallise insights emergent subject. At juncture, may hinge primarily emotional, lesser extent, technological perspectives. However, consumers an expressed preference for over cooking, boiler performance emerging enabling potential. formative phase transition, risks associated energy insecurity fuel poverty exceed concerns purchasing running costs. Nevertheless, economic remain less critical during pre-deployment innovation-decision process. Across full sample, simple slope highlights moderating effects gender, age, housing tenure. Moreover, statistically significant differences both sufficiency- necessity-based perspective detected between male property owners aged 55+ female mortgage 18–34 years old. By bridging knowledge gap acceptance intention, contribution reinforces need consumer engagement economy, advocating more fine-grained, mixed-methods analyses support decarbonisation strategies.

Hydrogen energy technologies are envisioned to play a critical supporting role in global decarbonisation. While low-carbon hydrogen is primarily targeted for reducing industrial emissions, alongside decarbonising parts of the transport sector, environmental benefits could also be achieved residential context. Presently, gas-dependent countries such as Japan and United Kingdom assessing feasibility deploying home appliances, part their national strategies. However, prospects transition will hinge on consumer acceptance, an array other socio-technical factors. To support potential ambitions large-scale sustained technology diffusion, this study advances Unified Theory Domestic Acceptance. Through integrative, comparative literature review targeting domestic studies, paper proposes novel Acceptance Model (DHAM), which accounts cognitive emotional dimensions human perceptions. dual interplay, proposed framework can increase predictive power acceptance models.

Abstract Purpose The widespread use of hydrogen in the EU aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions may involve complex value chains (e.g. importation from third countries) with potential effects (positive or negative) on different sectors society. Achieving sustainable deployment must be motivated not only by environmental and economic aspects but also social responsibility search for human well-being. Given this, scarcity studies currently available prospective impacts production, present purpose this article is to unveil assess main linked future chains. Methods methodological approach adopted encompasses following steps: (i) analysis two EU: an on-site option, where produced used same European country, off-site a country its usage involving more unit processes, terms storage transport activities, working time deliver quantity hydrogen. This framework will include scenario forward-looking perspective taking into account critical raw materials employed across entire chain, (ii) identification list relevant impact categories indicators through systematic procedure, (iii) hotspot using Product Social Impact Life Cycle Assessment (PSILCA) selected representative chains, (iv) conducting subsequently interpreting results. Results discussion chain shows relatively worse performance (6 72 times) than most due chain. Although hotspots depends specific indicator under evaluation, power source components (wind solar PV) manufacturing processes increased complexity option highly conditioned considered. A was carried out comparing both additional locations production: Northern Africa Western Asia. findings indicate that presents lowest scores. For production preferable evaluated. Conclusions According findings, producing location it consumed increases deployment. Measures mid long term should considered improving Europe. includes increasing reuse recycling, responsibly sourcing materials, creating regulatory frameworks ensuring safe conditions global Furthermore, highlights crucial role S-LCA methodology evaluating as support targeted policy interventions, need adapt case study. Hydrogen produced by renewable energy sources (green hydrogen) is at the centrepiece of European decarbonization strategies, necessitating large imports from third countries. Egypt potentially stands out as major production hub. While technical and economic viability are broadly discussed in literature, analyses local acceptance absent. This study closes this gap surveying 505 locals Suez Canal Economic Zone (Port Said Suez) regarding their attitudes towards development green hydrogen production. We find overall support for both national deployment export to Europe. Respondents see a key benefit rising income, thereby strongly underlying argument. Improved trade relationships or improved political seen potential benefits export, but less relevant engaging cooperation, putting spotlight on benefits. Our suggests that population more positive than negative scaling up projects Egypt.
