Lobularia maritima (sweet alyssum) is a popular ornamental plant that displays range of flower colors, particularly white and purple. However, the genetic underpinning evolutionary history colors have remained unknown. To address this, we performed de novo assembly chromosome-level genome for this species conducted comparative population genomic analyses both domestic wild representatives. These revealed distinct clusters corresponding to groups, with further subdivisions based on geographic phenotypic differences. Importantly, all cultivars originated from single domestication event within Tunisia group. One group did not contribute genetically current cultivars. The new mutations in key gene anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway, PAP1, arose following led origin purple coloration Moreover, contrasting PAP1 haplotypes varieties lead differential expression CHS DFR, which turn contributes observed color findings provide insights into regulation L. maritima, laying groundwork future breeding efforts focused plant, especially introducing sources other groups.

Rosmarinus officinalis L. has been widely used as a spice to enhance the shelf-life of food for centuries. While existing research in literature suggests that primary antibacterial component this plant is its essential oil (EO), there lack comparative studies employing both vitro and silico approaches evaluate antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic properties R. leaf EO (ROLEO) methanolic extract (ROLME). The present study investigates bioactive components biological activities ROLEO ROLME using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Additionally, total phenolic content (TPC) flavonoid (TFC) were quantified, their antidiabetic, evaluated studies. GC-MS analysis revealed 20 compounds ROLME, compared 73 ROLEO. TPC was higher, measuring 49.34 ± 2.84 mg GAE per gram dry weight extract, which had 38.13 3.31 extract. TFC measured at 24 1.47 QE/g weight, higher than 19 weight. demonstrated superior antioxidant activity low concentrations greater by suppressing actions α-amylase α-glucosidase enzymes. Moreover, showed promising anticancer effects lower doses, capabilities, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria. Molecular docking have identified key exhibit significant bioactivity. Among these compounds, 1H-Cycloprop[e]azulen-4-ol, decahydro-1,1,4,7-tetramethyl-, [1ar-(1α,4β,4aβ,7α,7aβ,7bα)]-demonstrated highest α-amylase, while thymol exhibited strongest caspase-3 E. coli gyrase B. Overall, molecular pharmacokinetic inhibitory on caspase-3, B, with favorable drug-like properties. These findings suggest may serve basis development innovative synthetic medications, offering valuable insights pharmaceutical industry design novel treatments various diseases.

Mining activities and associated waste materials pose significant environmental challenges, including soil, water, air contamination, along with health risks to nearby populations. Despite the harsh conditions of metal-enriched soils nutrient-poor substrates, certain plants known as metallophytes thrive in these environments. This study examined vascular flora Sardinia’s abandoned mining sites, a focus on identifying their potential role phytoremediation. A comprehensive floristic checklist was compiled using literature, field surveys, herbarium samples. Of 652 taxa identified, 49% were metallophytes, majority categorized facultative species. Notably, 27% identified suitable for phytostabilization, while 20% showed phytoextraction. also highlighted presence endemic endangered species, emphasizing need conservation efforts. The findings suggest that native could play key ecological restoration though careful consideration invasive species is necessary avoid disruption. research provides valuable insights into biodiversity Sardinian sites sustainable remediation strategies plants.

Essential oils (EOs) from various medicinal and aromatic plants are known for their diverse biological activities, including antimicrobial effects. Citrus aurantium EO is traditionally used therapeutic benefits due to its high content of bioactive compounds. Therefore, this study focuses on potential use as a food preservative by investigating the combined antibacterial properties EOs leaves (EO1), flowers (EO2), small branches (EO3) against six bacterial strains agar disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), bactericidal (MBC) methods. The chemical compositions were analysed gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed presence numerous compounds responsible properties. MIC values 3.12 mg/mL, 4.23 1.89 EO1, EO2 EO3, respectively, while MBC 12.5 6.25 respectively. A simplex centroid design was created analyse effect individual E. coli. showed enhanced activity compared oils, suggesting synergistic (e.g., trial 9 with an 0.21 mg/mL), allowing lower concentrations reducing negative effects flavour aroma. Additionally, practical application investigated (at twice MIC) in raw chicken meat stored at 4 °C 21 days. EOs, individually combination, effectively extended shelf life inhibiting growth (total count less than 1 × 104 CFU/g treated samples 7 107 control day storage). underlines C. natural preservatives that represent sustainable effective alternative synthetic chemicals preservation.
