Abstract A literature review of bioaccumulation and biotransformation organic chemicals in birds was undertaken, aiming to support scoping prioritization future research. The objectives were characterize available bioaccumulation/biotransformation data, identify knowledge gaps, determine how extant data can be used, explore the strategy steps forward. An intermediate approach balanced between expediency rigor taken given vastness literature. Following a critical > 500 peer-reviewed studies, 25,000 entries 2 million information bytes compiled on 700 compounds for ~ 320 wild species 60 domestic breeds birds. These organized into themed databases , field survey microsomal enzyme activity metabolic pathway bird taxonomy diet . Significant gaps identified all at multiple levels. Biotransformation characterization largely fragmented over metabolite/pathway identification or kinetics. Limited kinetic constrained development an avian model. substantial shortage vivo kinetics has been observed as most reported rate constants derived vitro. No metric comprehensively captured key contaminant classes chemical groups broad-scope modeling biotransformation. However, metrics such biota-feed accumulation factor, maximum transfer total elimination constant more readily usable benchmarking than other reviewed parameters. Analysis demonstrated lack shorebirds, seabirds, raptors. In study birds, this revealed need greater diversity, measurements environmental media, basic biometrics exposure conditions, tissues/matrices sampling, further exploration Limitations classical current research strategies used studies also discussed. Forward-looking proposed: adopting roadmap investigations, integrating existing biomonitoring gap-filling with non-testing approaches, improving reporting practices, expanding sampling scopes, bridging models theories, exploring via genomics, establishing online repository.

We compared long-term (1977 to 2014) trends in concentrations of PFAS eggs the marine sentinel species, Northern gannet (Morus bassanus), from Irish Sea (Ailsa Craig) and North (Bass Rock). Concentrations eight perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) three sulfonates (PFSAs) were determined we report first dataset on UK seabirds before after PFOS ban. There no significant differences ∑PFAS or ∑PFSAs between both colonies. The dominated profile (>80%); accounted for majority PFSAs (98-99%). In contrast, ∑PFCAs slightly but significantly higher Ailsa Craig than those Bass Rock. most abundant PFCAs perfluorotridecanoate (PFTriDA) perfluoroundecanoate (PFUnA) which, together with PFOA, comprised around 90% ∑PFCAs. had very different temporal trends. colonies increased earlier part study later declined significantly, demonstrating effectiveness phasing out production 2000s. constant low 1970s 1980s, suggesting minimal environmental contamination, residues subsequently until end study. This increase appeared driven by rises long chain compounds, namely odd numbered PFTriDA PFUnA. a trend other dominant acids, an rise followed decline last 15 years Craig; Rock unclear. Although contained relatively PFAS, that exceeded suggested Predicted No Effect Concentration ~ 10% Lowest-Observable-Adverse-Effect.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic organofluorine compounds used in various products, which highly durable the environment may pose risks to wildlife health. We investigated blood cell concentrations of PFAS breeding Scopoli's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) from three different colonies central southern Mediterranean (Linosa, Malta, La Maddalena). Shearwaters flexible, high trophic level foragers, foraging areas differ according sex stage. examined inter- intracolony differences compared them with exploited dietary tracers. were detected all samples, major congeners descending order being perfluoroctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluoroundecanoic (PFuNA), perfluorododecanoic (PFDoDA), perfluorotridecanoic (PFTriDA). The mean sum during chick-rearing phase was highest birds Malta (145.1 ng/g dry wt, 95% confidence interval [CI] 106.8, 183.5) Linosa (91.5 CI 72.9, 110.1) Maddalena (84.5 61.7, 107.3), composition differed. higher incubation than chick-rearing, males had females incubation. Some associated carbon nitrogen stable isotope values. After baseline adjustment values, no observed for adjusted δ15N δ13C between colonies, suggesting that levels attributed diet minor regional differences. Our study highlights useful biomonitors exposure remote marine areas.

We investigated the concentrations of 45 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in fledgling flesh-footed shearwater (Ardenna carneipes; n = 33) wedge-tailed (A. pacifica; 9) livers via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry their relationship to body morphometrics ingested plastic recorded 2019 on Lord Howe Island (NSW, Australia). Sixteen PFASs were detected, which perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was dominant compound, detected 100% birds (1.34-13.4 ng/g wet wt). Long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids, including perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA; <0.04-0.79 wt) perfluorotridecanoic (PFTrDA; <0.05-1.6 >50% birds. There a positive correlation between PFDA PFTrDA wing chord length (Rs 0.36, p 0.0204; Rs 0.44, 0.0037, respectively), total 0.33, 0.032), suggesting that these compounds may impact morphometrics. Plastic present intestinal tract 79% individuals (<7.6 g), although there no PFAS mass, indicating is not likely primary exposure source. The widespread occurrence marine from relatively pristine location Southern Hemisphere suggests further studies adult shearwaters other are warranted investigate whether any long-term physiological effects bird species. Research is underway to examine how a wide range of animal species have responded reduced levels human activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this perspective article, we argue that raptors (i.e., orders Accipitriformes, Cariamiformes, Cathartiformes, Falconiformes, and Strigiformes) are particularly well-suited for investigating potential 'anthropause' effects: they sensitive environmental perturbation, affected by various activities, include many locally globally threatened species. Lockdowns likely alter extrinsic factors normally limit raptor populations. These changes in turn expected influence - mediated behavioral physiological responses intrinsic (demographic) ultimately determine population distributions. Using population-limitation framework, identify research opportunities conservation challenges arisen pandemic, related disturbance, light noise pollution, collision risk, road-kill availability, supplementary feeding, persecution levels. Importantly, attract intense interest, with professional amateur researchers running long-term monitoring programs, often incorporating community-science components, advanced tracking technology field-methodological approaches allow flexible timing, enabling continued data collection before, during, after lockdowns. To facilitate coordinate global collaboration, hereby launching 'Global Anthropause Raptor Network' (GARRN). We invite international community join inclusive diverse group, tackle ambitious analyses across geographic regions, ecosystems, species, gradients lockdown perturbation. Under most tragic circumstances, anthropause has afforded an invaluable opportunity significantly boost conservation.
