Fluoxetine is one of the most studied and detected selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in aquatic environment, found at concentrations ranging from ng/L to μg/L. Its presence this environment can induce effects on organisms that may compromise their fitness. Several experimental studies have demonstrated fluoxetine neurotoxicity, genetic biochemical changes, cause behavioral dysfunction a wide range fish species. However, contradictory results be found. There thus need for comprehensive review current state knowledge different levels biological organization, highlighting inclusive patterns discussing potential causes results, available literature. This also aims explore identify main gaps areas future research. We conclude environmentally relevant (e.g., 0.00345 μg/L) produced adverse often concentration not addressed conventional environmental risk assessment strategies. persistence ionizable properties reinforce standardized testing with representative models, targeting endpoints sensitive specific mode action fluoxetine, order assess rank its actual ecosystems.

Abstract In our rapidly changing world, understanding how species respond to shifting conditions is of paramount importance. Pharmaceutical pollutants are widespread in aquatic ecosystems globally, yet their impacts on animal behaviour, life‐history and reproductive allocation remain poorly understood, especially the context intraspecific variation ecologically important traits that facilitate species' adaptive capacities. We test whether a pharmaceutical pollutant, fluoxetine (Prozac), disrupts trade‐off between individual‐level (co)variation behavioural, freshwater fish. exposed progeny wild‐caught guppies ( Poecilia reticulata ) three field‐relevant levels (mean measured concentrations: 0, 31.5 316 ng/L) for 5 years, across multiple generations. used 12 independent laboratory populations repeatedly quantified activity risk‐taking behaviour male guppies, capturing both mean behaviours within individuals exposure treatments. also key (body condition, coloration gonopodium size) assessed post‐copulatory sperm (sperm vitality, number velocity) known be under strong sexual selection polyandrous species. Intraspecific these was analysed using comprehensive, multivariate statistical approach. Fluoxetine had dose‐specific (mean) effect trait guppies: low pollutant altered body condition increased size, but reduced velocity. At individual level, behavioural plasticity by eroding within‐individual behaviour. between‐individual correlations pace‐of‐life syndrome traits: it triggered emergence (e.g. condition) size vitality), collapsed other size). Our results reveal chronic global can affect phenotypic at population levels, even alter among such manner. discuss need integrate analyses association with fully understand animals human‐induced environmental change.

Aims Antidepressants have aroused wide public concern due to their widespread presence in water and harm human health environment. This study was designed evaluate the contribution of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) antidepressants surface water. Methods Data evaluated by analyzing samples collected from influent, effluent, upstream downstream WWTPs on rivers interest Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Besides, also assessed impact release drinking An automatic solid-phase extraction combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) used detect antidepressants. Results The most abundant compound venlafaxine, followed citalopram, sertraline, fluvoxamine concentrations between 0.6 87 ng/L. showed maximum at effluent outlets WWTPs, greater were found than Qiantang River. results source finished that detection concentration lower limit method. Conclusions less identified. Nevertheless, these compounds hardly removed processes. Thus, risks deserve close attention.
