The presence of microplastics (MPs) in human fluids and organs is a great concern, since, as highlighted by recent studies on animal models, they could cause alterations several physiological functions, including reproduction. In this study, semen samples collected from men living polluted area the Campania Region (Southern Italy), were analyzed to assess MPs. N. 16 pigmented microplastic fragments (ranging 2 6 μm size) with spheric or irregular shapes found six out ten samples. The increasing global attention on micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) is a result of their ubiquity in the water, air, soil, and biosphere, exposing humans to MNPs daily basis threatening human health. Tap water nano/microplastics (NMPs) escaping from centralized treatment systems are of increasing global concern, because they pose potential health risk to humans via consumption. Drinking boiled water, an ancient tradition in some Asian countries, is supposedly beneficial for human health, as boiling can remove chemicals and most biological substances. However, it remains unclear whether effective removing NMPs tap water. Herein we present evidence that polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene coprecipitate with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) incrustants upon boiling. Boiling hard (>120 mg L–1 CaCO3) at least 80% size between 0.1 150 μm. Elevated temperatures promote CaCO3 nucleation on NMPs, resulting the encapsulation aggregation within incrustants.
