Abstract
The
concept
of
boredom
has
recently
attracted
the
attention
researchers
in
L2
education.
As
most
available
literature
focused
on
traditional,
in-person
classes,
very
little
is
known
about
how
students
experience
this
aversive
emotion
online
especially
those
prompted
by
COVID-19
pandemic.
To
fill
gap,
large-scale,
qualitative
study
surveys
opinion
240
demographically
versatile
English
major
from
twenty-five
universities
Iran
to
identify
activity
types
that
are
more
likely
induce
classes.
Thematic
analysis
data,
collected
through
open-ended
questionnaires
and
semi-structured
interviews
analysed
MAXQDA
software,
revealed
ten
different
which
were
boredom-inducing
due
their
non-engaging
or
cognitively
(un)demanding
nature.

Abstract
Building
on
the
control-value
theory,
present
study
examined
independent
and
joint
predictive
effects
of
three
emotions—enjoyment,
anxiety,
boredom—on
L2
achievement
over
time.
The
participants
were
a
group
junior
secondary
English
learners
in
rural
China,
population
that
has
hitherto
never
featured
learning
research.
Questionnaire
data
collected
at
four
different
time
points
(Time
1–Time
4:
T1–T4)
from
large
sample
954
learners.
Structural
equation
modeling
results
show
that:
(a)
emotions
T1
predicted
T2
(one
week
after
T1)
T3
(five
weeks
independently,
while
only
enjoyment
T4
(nine
T1);
(b)
when
combined,
was
strongest
most
enduring
predictor
across
T2–T4,
followed
by
anxiety
predicting
T2–T3
negatively,
boredom
completely
lost
its
power
T2–T4.

This
study
aimed
to
test
a
model
of
classroom
social
climate,
growth
language
mindset,
boredom,
and
student
engagement
among
English
as
foreign
(EFL)
learners.

past
decade
has
witnessed
a
surge
of
research
interest
in
diverse
emotions

foreign/second
language
(L2)
learners
experience.

they
are
associated
with
wide

learner-internal
variables

negative
correlation
between
FLE
FLLB;

Given
much
importance
associated
with
willingness
to
communicate
(WTC)
in
foreign
language
learning,
many
researchers
have
carried
out
studies
explore
antecedents
of
second
(L2)
WTC.
To

and
WTC
among
English
major
students.
