A large-scale transition of food consumption in high-income countries is required to mitigate adverse impacts on the climate and environment. To further understand which actions can contribute triggering societal tipping sustainability transitions empirical observations a closer link existing theories urgently needed. We integrate renowned models behavior change, consumption, marketing into framework positive points using an analysis four case studies from Denmark. The proposed specifies enabling conditions, interventions, reinforcing feedback. suggest that factors identified consumer-oriented theoretical frameworks lead points. Also, sustainable requires not only engagement all groups actors—business/industry, policy, civil society, consumers—but also pooling aligning available resources trigger point. provide interesting examples how influential single players scale up system change. paper concludes with critical reflection system.

The agricultural sector is responsible for a large share of natural resource use and climate impact. A sustainable food system transition requires amongst others that majority consumers begins to eat more plant based. However, so far, only niche or minority eats primarily With conceptual background in positive tipping points sustainability transitions social network theory, this paper uses segmentation analysis representative consumer survey data Denmark characterize segments differ psychographic drivers barriers meat reduction. From the eight found, three are already part niche, emerge as opposed plant-based, but two potential next consumers. We discuss how trigger behaviour change towards eating plant-rich ways match motivations contribute literature work on systems transitions.

United States (U.S.) and global experts recommend that populations reduce red processed meat (RPM) intake transition to plant-rich, sustainable diets support human planetary health. A systematic scoping review was conducted identify the landscape of media campaigns promote plant-rich dietary patterns, traditional plant proteins, novel plant-based alternatives (PBMA) encourage or discourage RPM products Americans. Of 8321 records screened from four electronic databases, 103 were included, along with 62 gray literature sources. Across 84 (1917–2023) identified, corporate marketing (58.6%) most prevalent compared public information (13.8%), sustainability (12.6%), countermarketing (5.7%), social (4.6%), policy (4.6%) campaigns. Findings indicate long-running campaigns, many U.S. government oversight, dominated for decades, running alongside protein Novel PBMA emerged in past decade. Many civil society promoted but few utilized norm behavior change theory, only Meatless Monday campaign evaluated. The government, academia, businesses, should commit more resources evaluate impact a diet Americans, restrict regulate use misinformation prioritize proteins patterns.
