How do experiences in nature or spiritual contemplation being moved by music with psychedelics promote mental and physical health? Our proposal this article is awe. To make argument, we first review recent advances the scientific study of awe, an emotion often considered ineffable beyond measurement. Awe engages five processes—shifts neurophysiology, a diminished focus on self, increased prosocial relationality, greater social integration, heightened sense meaning—that benefit well-being. We then apply model to illuminate how awe that arise nature, spirituality, music, collective movement, strengthen mind body.

This article considers the status and study of "context" in psychological science through lens research on emotional expressions. The begins by updating three well-trod methodological debates role context expressions to reconsider several fundamental assumptions lurking within field's dominant tradition: namely, that certain expressive movements have biologically prepared, inherent meanings issue from singular, universal processes which are independent but interact with contextual influences. second part this scientific opportunities await if we set aside traditional understanding as a moderator signals meaning instead consider possibility events emerge ecosystems signal ensembles, such any individual is entirely relational. Such shift has radical implications not only for emotion more generally. It offers improve validity trustworthiness beyond what can be achieved improvements rigor alone. Affective experiences are commonly represented by either transient emotional reactions to discrete events or longer term, sustained mood states that characterized a more diffuse and global nature. While both have considerable influence in shaping memory, their interaction can produce mood-congruent memory (MCM), psychological phenomenon where is biased toward content affectively congruent with past current mood. The study of MCM has direct implications for understanding how biases form daily life, as well debilitating negative schemas contribute disorders such depression. To elucidate the factors presence strength MCM, here we systematically review literature studies assessed inducing healthy participants. We observe often reported enhanced accuracy previously encoded preferential recall autobiographical events, but may also manifest false lures. discuss relevant conditions shape these effects, instances mood-incongruent facilitate repair. Further, provide guiding methodological theoretical considerations, emphasizing limited neuroimaging research this area need renewed focus on consolidation. Accordingly, propose framework studying neural basis based neurobiological underpinnings emotion. In doing so, evidence associative network models spreading activation, while considering alternative informed cognitive neuroscience bias. Social Functionalist Theory (SFT) emerged 20 years ago to orient emotion science the social nature of emotion. Here we expand upon SFT and make case for how emotions, relationships, culture constitute one another. First, posit that emotions enable individual meet six "relational needs" within interactions: security, commitment, status, trust, fairness, belongingness. Building this new theorising, detail four principles concerning emotional experience, cognition, expression, cultural archiving We conclude by considering bidirectional influences between culture, emotion, outlining areas future inquiry.
