Abstract In birds, the quadrate bone acts as a hinge between lower jaw and skull, playing an important role in cranial kinesis. As such, evolution of avian morphology may plausibly be assumed to have been influenced by selective pressures related feeding ecology. However, variation across living birds its potential relationship with ecology never quantitatively characterised. Here, we used three-dimensional geometric morphometrics phylogenetic comparative methods quantify morphological array key ecological features 200 bird species covering all major extant lineages. We found non-significant associations shape several aspects foraging different scales comparison. By contrast, allometry phylogeny exhibit stronger relationships than other features. show that evolves integrated unit exhibits strong morphologies neighbouring bones. Our results collectively suggest macroevolutionary scenario which evolved jointly elements kinetic system, lineages exploring alternative morphologies—highlighting diagnostic value investigations fossil systematics.

Species residing across elevational gradients display adaptations in response to environmental changes such as oxygen availability, ultraviolet radiation, and temperature. Here, we study genomic variation, gene expression, long-term adaptation Tibetan Partridge (Perdix hodgsoniae) populations the gradient of Plateau. A morphological trait can have multiple functions shaped by varying selective forces. Bare parts in birds, such as wattles, casques and combs, are known to function both signalling thermoregulation. Studies demonstrated structures targets of sexual selection via female choice several species Galliformes (junglefowl, turkeys grouse), though other studies shown some role thermoregulation (guineafowl). Here, we tested fundamental hypotheses regarding the evolution maintenance bare Galliformes. Using a phylogeny that included nearly 90% order, evaluated natural shaping across different clades. We found combination environmental putative sexually selected traits strongly predicted variation for males females When analysis is restricted largest family, Phasianidae (pheasants, junglefowl allies), were primary predictors parts. Our results suggest important but primarily under strong within Phasianidae.

Abstract Studies of evolution and biodiversity require solid understanding species systematics revealed by molecular phylogeny using multilocus genomic data. Multilocus analyses, nevertheless, remain difficult in non-model taxa due to limited access samples resources. To help overcome this limitation, ultra-conserved elements (UCEs) have been developed generate large nuclear datasets build more robust phylogenies. Recently, MitoFinder pipeline was further extract mitochondrial genes from the off-target sequences UCE libraries allow mito-nuclear comparison increase database. Here we applied published serotine bats (genus Eptesicus ) focused on E. (Histiotus) whose evolutionary history is poorly understood. Our results showed extensive discordances divergence major clades within , indicating potential incomplete lineage sorting historical introgression across subgenera. Moreover, collected several new including first data recently described (H) diaphanopterus combined available most taxa-complete bats. Results supported early (H.) magellanicus status . In addition, found strong evidence cryptic diversity, with potentially Peru, Uruguay, Brazil, which needs be evaluated future studies complementary study enriched sequence database shed light hidden diversity complex

The Old-World quails, Coturnix coturnix (common quail) and japonica (Japanese quail), are morphologically similar yet occupy distinct geographic ranges. This study aimed to elucidate their evolutionary trajectory ancestral distribution patterns through a thorough analysis of mitochondrial genomes. Mitogenomic revealed high structural conservation, identical translational mechanisms, pressures in both species. Selection significant evidence positive selection across the lineage for nad4 gene tree owing environmental changes acclimatization requirements during its history. Divergence time estimations imply that diversification among species occurred mid-Miocene (13.89 Ma), current distributions were primarily shaped by dispersal rather than global vicariance events. Phylogenetic indicates close relationship between C. japonica, with divergence estimated at 2.25 Ma Pleistocene epoch. Ancestral range reconstructions indicate ancestors clade distributed over Oriental region. subsequently dispersed Eurasia Africa, eastern Asia. Deciphering the role of climatic oscillations in species divergence helps us understand mechanisms that shape global biodiversity. The cold-adapted may have expanded their distribution with development glaciers during glacial period. With retreat glaciers, these were discontinuously distributed high-altitude mountains and isolated by geographical barriers. However, study focuses on speciation process is scant. To fill this gap, we combined population genetic data ecological niche models (ENMs) to explore snow partridge (Lerwa lerwa). Lerwa lerwa a bird from 4,000 5,500 m. We found 2 populations within L. lerwa, they diverged each other at about 0.40-0.44 million years ago (inter-glacial period after Zhongliangan glaciation). ENMs suggested low elevations Himalayas Hengduan period, whereas it contracted high elevations, southern Himalayas, inter-glacial periods. Effective size trajectory also its Consistent our expectation, results support isolation contributed Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. This deepens understanding how driven Phasianidae mountains.

Background: Phasianidae mitogenomes exhibit significant structural variations critical for understanding evolution and subspecies divergence. However, annotations of these features in some pheasant species remain limited. This study aimed to enhance their evolutionary patterns. Methods: A comparative analysis complete from Phasianus colchicus, versicolor, 22 other accipitrids was conducted, examining codon usage, rRNA structures, selective pressures, phylogenetics, variations. Results: The mitogenome P. colchicus is 16,696 bp, comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 2 tRNA a control region, with base composition A: 30.61%, T: 25.26%, C: 30.85%, G: 13.28%. Phylogenetic revealed versicolor are closely related, the following relationship: ((Phasianus + Chrysolophus) (Crossoptilon Lophura)). Divergence timing aligns Tibetan Plateau uplift during Tertiary Pliocene. Ka/Ks suggests CO I, II, III, ND1, ND4L, ND6 genes underwent strong pressure plateau adaptation. Conclusions: confirms monophyly its close relationship Chrysolophus. Adaptation-related pressures on highlight role environments, offering valuable insights into phylogeny.
