In the United States, politics has become tribal and personalized. The influence of partisan divisions extended beyond political realm into everyday life, affecting relationships workplaces as well ballot box. Prompting officials' innovation willingness is a prerequisite for processes of public sector innovation. Descriptive Representation and Innovation in American Legislatures DOI

Previous scholarship has linked increased representation of women, racial/ethnic minorities, the LGB community, and working class to more representative legislative agendas roll call voting. But it is unclear if descriptive historically excluded groups also affects policy innovativeness. Borrowing from interdisciplinary research, we argue that diverse legislatures are innovative, so long as legislators operate in a quality deliberative environment. We measure seven different underrepresented state 1984 2016. find women key predictor innovation, operationalized tendency for states adopt new policies early. effect not dependent on critical mass, undermined by high levels polarization, helps boost capacity produce unique language. Abstract In the study of policy diffusion process, scholars have found that states adopt policies to remain competitive with one another over economic resources. But rapid spread Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies, which treat college athletes as professionals, is not readily explained by competition nor other mechanisms. Abstract This work explores the ways that federalism exacerbates gender inequality among women by explaining adoption of domestic violence laws across different states in context policy diffusion. Using an original dataset firearm law (DVFL) enactments all 50 United States from 1990 to 2017, we analyze circumstances under which will adopt these laws. a set political and demographic indicators as independent variables, find evidence state federal factors influence adoption.
