Cigarette butts are one of the most prevalent forms litter worldwide and may leach toxic compounds when deposited in aquatic environments. Previous studies demonstrated that smoked cigarette leachate is toward organisms. However, specific bioavailable chemicals from potential for human wildlife exposure through food chain were unknown. Using a nontargeted analytical approach based on GC×GC/TOF-MS, 43 confirmed to cigarettes exposed water source. Additionally, bioaccumulation organic contaminants an edible fish, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), was assessed direct at 0.5 CB/L 28 days. There significant reduction fish mass among vs control group (χ2 (1) = 5.3, p 0.021). Both targeted chemical analysis representative tissue identified four tobacco alkaloids, nicotine, nicotyrine, myosmine, 2,2′-bipyridine. Their average concentrations 466, 55.4, 94.1, 70.8 ng/g, respectively. This study identifies leached demonstrates uptake trout, thus suggesting accumulation webs, resulting exposure.

The monitoring of legacy contaminants in sentinel northern marine mammals has revealed some the highest concentrations globally. However, investigations into presence chemicals emerging Arctic concern (CEACs) and other lesser-known are rarely conducted, if at all. Here, we used a nontarget/suspect approach to screen for thousands different chemicals, including many CEACs plastic-related compounds (PRCs) blubber/adipose from killer whales (Orcinus orca), narwhals (Monodon monoceros), long-finned pilot (Globicephala melas), polar bears (Ursus maritimus) East Greenland. 138 were tentatively identified mostly as PRCs, four confirmed using authentic standards: di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), diethyl (DEP), di(2-propylheptyl) (DPHP), one antioxidant (Irganox 1010). Three nonylphenol isomer, 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, dioctyl sebacate, exhibited fragmentation patterns matching those library databases. While phthalates only above detection limits bear narwhal, Irganox 1010, nonylphenol, 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol detected >50% all samples. This study represents first application screening cetaceans, leading identification multiple PRCs their blubber. Further nontarget analyses warranted comprehensively characterize extent CEAC PRC contamination within food webs.

Abstract The health of key species in the Baltic region has been impaired by exposure to anthropogenic hazardous substances (AHSs), which accumulate organisms and are transferred through food chains. There is, thus, a need for comprehensive characterization occurrence accumulation AHSs ecosystem. In this study, we use non-target screening (NTS) approach purpose. A major challenge NTS biological samples is removal matrix components such as lipids that may interfere with detection identification compounds interest. Here, combine gel permeation chromatography Florisil ® column fractionation achieve sufficient lipid gas chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis using electron ionization (EI) capture negative ion chemical (ECNI). addition, present new data processing workflows designed systematically find identify frequently occurring biomagnifying AHSs, including known, emerging, contaminants. Using these workflows, discovered wide range contaminants tissue from blue mussels, fish, marine mammals, calculated their biomagnification factors (BMFs). Compounds BMFs above 1 herring at least one mammal included legacy chlorinated pollutants (polychlorinated biphenyls, DDTs, chloro-benzenes/cyclohexanes, chlordanes, toxaphenes, dieldrin), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), brominated biphenyls. However, there were also several halogenated natural products (halogenated methoxylated ethers, 1′-methyl-1,2′-bipyrroles, 1,1′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyrroles, monoterpene mixed compound 1) well novel flame retardant Dechlorane 602 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, terpenoids, steroids. exhibited expected behavior, demonstrating utility unguided workflow.

Thousands of halogenated natural products (HNPs) pervade the terrestrial and marine environment. HNPs are generated by biotic abiotic processes range in complexity from low molecular mass halocarbons (nHCs, mostly halomethanes haloethanes) to compounds higher which often contain oxygen and/or nitrogen atoms addition halogens (hHNPs). nHCs have a key role regulating tropospheric stratospheric ozone, while some hHNPs bioaccumulate toxic properties similar those anthropogenic-persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Both chemical classes common sources: biosynthesis bacteria, phytoplankton, macroalgae, invertebrate animals, both may be similarly impacted alteration production transport pathways changing climate. The scientific community is advanced investigating sources, atmospheric oceanic transport, forecasting climate change impacts through modeling. By contrast, these activities nascent or nonexistent for hHNPs. goals this paper (1) review production, distribution, water air, pointing out areas commonality, (2) analogy nHCs, argue that alter factors hHNPs, (3) suggest steps improve linkage between science better understand predict impacts.
