Despite the increasing health risks shown by continuous detection of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in biota recent years, information on occurrence and potential OPEs marine mammals remains limited. This study conducted first investigation into body burdens 10 traditional (tOPEs) five emerging (eOPEs) cetacean species (n = 84) from northern South China Sea (NSCS) during 2005–2021. All OPEs, except for 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPHP), were detected these cetaceans, indicating their widespread NSCS. Although levels ∑10tOPEs humpback dolphins remained stable 2005 to 2021, concentrations ∑5eOPEs showed a significant increase, suggesting growing demand new-generation China. Dolphins proximity urban regions generally exhibited higher OPE than those rural areas, mirroring environmental trends occurring this area. congeners, EHDPHP, maternal transfer ratio >1, that dolphin placenta may not be an efficient barrier OPEs. The observed correlations between hormones (triiodothyronine, thyroxine, testosterone) indicated exposures might have endocrine disruption effects population.

Microplastics (MPs), an emerging ubiquitous pollutant in the aquatic ecosystem, pose serious health concerns to survival of fauna, especially top predators (e.g., mammals). It is challenging investigate toxicological profile MPs mammals due their diverse behaviour, physico-chemical properties, and other technical ethical issues. This study reviewed current burden occurrence various tissues mammals, its composition (heavy metals, pesticides, pathogens), possible effects on individual population levels mammals. Aquatic are constantly exposed directly indirectly via food-web. The a wide range toxic heavy pathogens added during manufacturing or adsorbed from surrounding environments bioaccumulated for years. Due long life-span body masses, these pollutants can cause several issues that drastically reduce size ultimately extinction, vulnerable populations. Still today presence deep largely remains unknown We therefore suggest global assessment risks associated with consumption by habitats.

Ocean disposal of industrial waste from technical DDT [mainly 1,1′-(2,2,2-trichloroethane-1,1-diyl)bis(4-chlorobenzene), or 4,4′-DDT] manufacture occurred historically in the Southern California Bight. However, paucity historical records highlights uncertainties as to mode, location, and timing ongoing ecological effects these wastes. This study combines sampling, chemical analysis, numerical modeling deep San Pedro Basin sediments revealing substantial contamination that extends at least 25 km mainland. These findings narrate bulk offshore peaked 1950s, prior onset formal regulations; was agnostic later-designated sites; has experienced sluggish transformation. Our further indicate an attenuating secondary source for daughter product, 1-chloro-4-[2,2-dichloro-1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethenyl]benzene (4,4′-DDE), which still deposits into sediments. Citrate acid esters (CAEs) have been proposed as a class of phthalate substitute plasticizers; however, information on their occurrence in indoor environments is rare. By using liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometer, we developed an integrated strategy that can be applied for target, suspect, and characteristic fragment-dependent screening CAEs. In n = 50 dust samples collected from Nanjing City (China), three CAEs, namely, acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC; mean: 412,000 ng/g), (TBC, 11,600 triethyl (TEC, 10,900 exhibited the greatest contamination levels. Total concentrations CAEs (∑8CAEs) were statistically significantly (p < 0.01) greater than those common organophosphate triesters (OPTEs), ubiquitous contaminants dust. Suspect (m/z 111.0078 ([C5H3O3]+) m/z 129.0181 ([C5H5O4]+)) further conducted same batch samples. We tentatively identified six novel most frequent abundant CAE was fully aconitate (TBA). Statistically significant correlation relationships observed levels between TBA vs ATBC (r 0.650; p TBC 0.384; 0.01), suggesting similar sources

As apex predators, marine mammals play a key role in maintaining community structure and functioning ecosystems. Hence, decline mammal populations may have negative effects on the ecosystem function services. The discharge of anthropogenic chemicals particles (micropollutants) into environment threatens health mammals. Traditional approaches for assessing impact micropollutants are limited by complexity (e.g., low concentrations, unknown contaminants, transformation products, mixture effect) complex physiology, life history, multiple stressors, logistical challenges) environment. Recently developed (bio)analytical tools that can integrate chemical biological assessment such as non-target suspect screening, direct effect analysis, multiomics metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, transcriptomics) offer critical insights (i) risks 'known' 'unknown' mammals, (ii) link between exposure population effects, (iii) identification priority micropollutants. The performance of silicon wristband passive samplers (WB), combined with comprehensive two-dimensional gas-chromatography/time-of-flight mass-spectrometry (GC × GC/ToF–MS), for the analysis urban derived pollutants in personal environment was evaluated. Cumulative 5-day exposure samples from 27 individuals areas different geographical/socioeconomic characteristics within Santiago Metropolitan Region (Chile) were collected during winter and summer (2016–2017). Samples extracted without cleanup/fractionation analyzed using targeted nontargeted methods. quantified semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs, n = 33) (targeted analysis), tentatively identified features (n 595–1011) (nontargeted analysis) classified according to their use/source. Seasonal differences observed analysis, while seasonal spatial analysis. Higher concentrations combustion products winter, higher consumer found summer. Spatial hierarchical clustering data, distinct clusters corresponding specific subregions area. Results this study provide distributions an area establish utility linking WB as a tool identify prioritize new exposures contaminants at local/community level.

The bans on bisphenol A (BPA) have facilitated the widespread use of BPA alternatives and shifted environmental contamination profiles bisphenols (BPs). However, continued reports toxicities emerging raised questions about whether shifting are contributed to mitigate BPs-mediated endocrine-disruption effects (EDEs). Cetaceans commonly used as ideal sentinel species for monitoring marine pollutants concern determining potential health effects, but far less is known BP loads EDEs in cetaceans. Here we measured hepatic concentrations six BPs eight stranded cetacean (n = 41) South China Sea, between 2007 2020. large-bodied whales generally showed higher ∑BPs than small-bodied dolphins. In Indo-Pacific finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) 33), first increased (2007–2014) then decreased (2014–2020), while ∑BPAlternatives from It appears that gradually replaced BPA, probably due BPA-related China. order examine hormone disruption its porpoises, five blubber hormones (cortisol, progesterone, testosterone, triiodothyronine tetraiodothyronine), which proven be validated endocrine biomarkers, were 21 samples.
