Phytoplankton plays an essential role in the biogeochemical cycle because it is at top of food chain and a source oxygen. Eutrophication causes coastal areas to deteriorate as industrialization accelerates, leading harmful algal blooms (HABs), severely affecting human ecological health. The frequency extent HAB events potentially may increase due climate change. outbreaks have led substantial losses for major economies globally, therefore emerged critical research focus environmental sciences. However, lack overview diverse factors influencing HABs complicates cause identification effective countermeasure development occurrence, thereby impeding formulation targeted strategies prediction mitigation. Therefore, this review summarizes influential areas, including water quality (nutrients, salinity, stratification, biological factors) climatological (temperature, pH pCO2, irradiance light). Recent work with several algae species suggested that warmer temperatures combined nutrient variation, stronger ocean acidification growth some toxic dinoflagellate species. Although effects vary different locations, intensification anthropogenic activities change likely will frequency, outbreak scale, severity most HABs. Because predicting crucial understanding synergy their minimizing decision makers stakeholders, we reviewed models HABs, process-based models, traditional statistical-empirical data-driven machine learning models. Predicting becomes more challenging spatial distribution influenced by future patterns. This paper presents comprehensive various impacting serving valuable resource researchers design mitigation strategies.

Climate change and anthropogenic pressures have significantly affected coastal environments. This study obtained historical data on harmful algal blooms (HABs) nutrient patterns over a 30-year period to explore responses long-term climate pressure indicators. Although the surrounding area has achieved great economic success past 30 years, Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB) been seriously by various pollutants is threatened increasing eutrophication HABs due pressures. In ZJB, rarely occurred before 1980s but periodically frequently since 2000s. The largest HAB covered cumulative of 310 km 2 in 2005. Most during spring. Additionally, dominant phytoplankton species were Skeletonema costatum Phaeocystis globosa , accounting for 37.50 43.75% observed, respectively. Anthropogenic caused regime increased ZJB three decades ( P < 0.05). Specifically, concentration dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) threefold from beginning 1990 2019 period, while phosphorus (DIP) 21-fold. Unsynchronized variation led changes composition nutrients, ecosystem shifted P-limited oligotrophic state 2000s an N-limited eutrophic state. indicators showed significant linear correlation with nutrients 0.05), did not play direct role problem this > Therefore, integrated land-ocean environment management should be introduced reduce land-based pollution sources, mitigate eutrophication, curb algae ZJB.

Aquatic ecosystems are increasingly threatened by multiple human-induced stressors associated with climate and anthropogenic changes, including warming, nutrient pollution, harmful algal blooms, hypoxia, changes in CO 2 pH. These may affect systems additively synergistically but also counteract each other. The resultant ecosystem occur rapidly, affecting both biotic abiotic components their interactions. Moreover, the complexity of interactions increases as one ascends food web due to differing sensitivities exposures among life stages species interactions, such competition predation. There is a need further understand nontraditional mixotrophy, which ability combine photosynthesis feeding single organism. these webs presents challenges modeling management. Developing ecological models multistressor effects challenged lack sufficient data on interactive across different trophic levels substantial variability regional scales. To obtain broad suite nested set experiments can be employed. Modular, coupled, multitrophic level will provide flexibility explore additive, amplified, propagated, antagonistic, and/or reduced that emerge from stressors. Here, eutrophication change reviewed, then example around world used illustrate how model scenarios examine potential future changes.

Although great efforts have been made to decrease nutrient (notably nitrogen and phosphorus) loads lighten related environmental damages, coastal eutrophication remains a persistent crisis. To estimate whether the rapid development of local economy has accelerated in Zhanjiang Bay, newly developing industry South China, combination seasonal nutrients other physicochemical parameters from twenty cruises during 2017-2021 historical data (past 30 years) was analyzed this study. The results showed that upper bay is significantly higher than lower (more 8 times), which mainly terrestrial input weak hydrological conditions bay. Also, more severe rainy seasons dry (nearly 2 times) because abundant phosphorus were brought into by discharge river water. From long-term perspective, dissolved inorganic concentrations effectively controlled while phosphate concentration increased sharply past years. Correspondingly, Bay over years, index recent 5 years (2017-2021) nearly 10 times 1990s, suggesting increase increasing industrial factories around rather culprit causing aggravation eutrophication. Our study essential implement land-ocean integrated control strategy improve water quality mitigate
