Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a versatile synthetic polymer, used for the design of hydrogels, porous membranes and films. Its solubility in water, film- hydrogel-forming capabilities, non-toxicity, crystallinity excellent mechanical properties, chemical inertness stability towards biological fluids, superior oxygen gas barrier good printability availability (relatively low production cost) are main aspects that make PVA suitable variety applications, from biomedical pharmaceutical uses to sensing devices, packaging materials or wastewater treatment. However, pure present limited flexibility poor biocompatibility biodegradability, which restrict its use alone various applications. mixed with other polymers biomolecules (polysaccharides, proteins, peptides, amino acids etc.), as well inorganic/organic compounds, generates wide PVA’s shortcomings considerably improved, new functionalities obtained. Also, transformation brings features opens door unexpected uses. The review focused on recent advances PVA-based hydrogels.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) is one of the most attractive polymers with a wide range uses because its water solubility, biocompatibility, low toxicity, good mechanical properties, and relatively cost. Traditional disposable personal protective equipment (PPE) only blocks pathogenic bacteria by mechanical filtration, with the risk of recontamination and transmission remaining. Herein, inspired phenolic-enabled nanotechnology (PEN), we proposed engineered polyphenol coatings plant-derived aromatic aldehydes metal involvement, denoted as FQM, to obtain desired photocatalysis-self-Fenton antibacterial performance. Experiments theoretical analysis proved dual mechanism Fe-induced enhancement: (1) tuning molecular structure realized improved optical properties; (2) Fe(III)/Fe(II) triggered photocatalytic cascade self-Fenton reaction. Mechanism study reveals FQM killing direct-contact ROS attack gene regulation. Further, was developed ideal coating on different fabrics (cloth cotton, polyester, N95 mask), more than 93% after 5 cycles use. Such based polyphenols endowed desirable safety, sustainability, efficient features are promising solutions meet challenges currently available PPE.

Abstract The ultraviolet/flame retardant protection cotton fabric is successfully prepared using a spray baking process with tannic acid (TA) and phytic (PA) as key ingredients to address the issues of such high flammability lack ultraviolet (UV) resistance. With respect treated by 4 wt% PA solution 3 TA solution, it presented 29.5% limited oxygen index (LOI) value, 8.0 cm damaged length 26.4 factor (UPF), while they were 28.3%, 7.5 30.6 for which indicated that in mixed system, although primarily acted an anti‐UV agent, also exhibited flame properties, functioned could provide certain degree UV protection. through this facile method excellent UV/flame capabilities, improved functional efficiency materials.
