In the past several decades, research on emotional development has flourished. Scientists have made progress in understanding infants', children's, and adults' abilities to recognize, communicate, regulate their emotions. However, many questions remain unanswered or only partly answered. We are poised move from descriptions of aspects functioning conceptualizing studying developmental mechanisms that underlie those aspects. The gaps our knowledge provide numerous opportunities for further investigation. With this special issue Developmental Psychology, we aim stimulate such progress, especially among colleagues at beginning careers. articles intended challenge concepts take new directions. Abstract Functional neurological disorder reflects impairments in brain networks leading to distressing motor, sensory and/or cognitive symptoms that demonstrate positive clinical signs on examination incongruent with other conditions. A central issue historical and contemporary formulations of functional has been the mechanistic aetiological role emotions. However, debate mostly omitted fundamental questions about nature emotions first place. In this perspective article, we outline a set relevant working principles (e.g. allostasis, predictive processing, interoception affect), followed by focused review theory constructed emotion introduce new understanding what are. Building theoretical framework, formulate how altered category construction can be an integral component pathophysiology related somatic symptoms. doing so, address several themes for field including: (i) energy regulation process relate symptom generation, including revisiting alexithymia, ‘panic attack without panic’, dissociation, insecure attachment influential life experiences; (ii) re-interpret select neurobiological research findings cohorts through lens illustrate its potential relevance; (iii) discuss therapeutic implications. While continue support is mechanistically aetiologically heterogenous, consideration relates generation maintenance offers integrated viewpoint cuts across neurology, psychiatry, psychology cognitive-affective neuroscience.

Abstract Rational Sentimentalism develops a novel theory of the sentimental values. These values, which include funny, disgusting, and shameful, are profoundly important because they set standards for emotional responses that part our shared human nature. Yet moral philosophers have neglected them relative to their prominence in mental life. The is sentimentalist it holds these values emotion-dependent—contrary some prominent accounts funny disgusting. Its rational aspect arises from its insistence shameful (e.g.) not whatever elicits shame but what makes fitting. Shameful traits provide reasons be ashamed do depend on whether one disposed them. Abstract To date we know little about natural emotion word repertoires, and whether or how they are associated with emotional functioning. Principles from linguistics suggest that the richness diversity of individuals’ actively used vocabularies may correspond their typical experiences. The current investigation measures active in participant-generated speech examined relationships to individual differences mood, personality, physical well-being. Study 1 analyzes stream-of-consciousness essays by 1,567 college students. 2 public blogs written over 35,000 individuals. studies yield consistent findings vocabulary corresponds broadly experience. This study examined two facets of emotion development: word comprehension (knowing the meaning words such as "anger" or "excitement") and concept abstraction (representing emotions in terms internal psychological states that generalize across situations). Using a novel vocabulary assessment, we captured how cross-sectional sample participants aged 4-25 (N = 196) defined 24 emotions. Smoothing spline regression models suggested followed an emergent shape: Knowledge increased childhood plateaued around age 11. Human coders rated abstractness participants' responses, these ratings also shape but significantly later than comprehension, 18. An automated linguistic analysis supported coders' perceptions age. Finally, assessed definitional strategies used to describe Young children tended using concrete providing example situations evoked those by referring physiological markers emotional experiences. Whereas use decreased with age, tendency more abstract general definitions delineated causes characteristics synonyms Overall, this work (a) provides tool for assessing terms, (b) demonstrates increases (c) suggests adolescence is period which are comprehended their level continues mature. This article considers the status and study of "context" in psychological science through lens research on emotional expressions. The begins by updating three well-trod methodological debates role context expressions to reconsider several fundamental assumptions lurking within field's dominant tradition: namely, that certain expressive movements have biologically prepared, inherent meanings issue from singular, universal processes which are independent but interact with contextual influences. second part this scientific opportunities await if we set aside traditional understanding as a moderator signals meaning instead consider possibility events emerge ecosystems signal ensembles, such any individual is entirely relational. Such shift has radical implications not only for emotion more generally. It offers improve validity trustworthiness beyond what can be achieved improvements rigor alone.
