In the past several decades, research on emotional development has flourished. Scientists have made progress in understanding infants', children's, and adults' abilities to recognize, communicate, regulate their emotions. However, many questions remain unanswered or only partly answered. We are poised move from descriptions of aspects functioning conceptualizing studying developmental mechanisms that underlie those aspects. The gaps our knowledge provide numerous opportunities for further investigation. With this special issue Developmental Psychology, we aim stimulate such progress, especially among colleagues at beginning careers. articles intended challenge concepts take new directions. Ordinary language in Western and non-Western cultures individuates shared mental states or experiences as unitary interpersonal events that belong to more than one individual. The Default Mode Network has been extensively studied in recent decades due to its central role higher cognitive processes and relevance for understanding mental disorders. This neural network, characterized by synchronized coherent activity at rest, is intrinsically linked self-reflection, exploration, social interaction, emotional processing. Our of the DMN extends beyond humans non-human animals, where it observed various species, highlighting evolutionary basis adaptive significance throughout phylogenetic history. Additionally, plays a crucial brain development during childhood adolescence, influencing fundamental processes. literature review aims provide comprehensive overview DMN, addressing structural, functional, aspects, as well impact from infancy adulthood. By gaining deeper organization function we can advance our knowledge mechanisms that underlie cognition, behavior, health. Historically, research characterizing the development of emotion recognition has focused on identifying specific skills and age periods, or milestones, at which these abilities emerge. However, advances in raise questions about whether this conceptualization accurately reflects how children learn about, understand, respond to others’ emotions everyday life. In review, we propose a developmental framework for emergence reasoning—that is, develop ability make reasonably accurate inferences predictions states other people. We describe holds promise building upon extant research. Our review suggests that use term can be misleading imprecise, with processes interest better characterized by reasoning. also highlight succeed many tasks myriad processes. It has long been claimed that certain configurations of facial movements are universally recognized as emotional expressions because they evolved to signal information in situations posed fitness challenges for our hunting and gathering hominin ancestors. Experiments from the last decade have called this particular evolutionary hypothesis into doubt by studying emotion perception a wider sample small-scale societies with discovery-based research methods. We replicate these newer findings Hadza Northern Tanzania; semi-nomadic hunters gatherers who live tight-knit social units collect wild foods large portion their diet, making them particularly relevant population testing hypotheses about emotion. Across two studies, we found little evidence universal perception. Rather, consistent people infer meaning using knowledge embrained cultural learning.

Friends and therapists often encourage people in distress to say how they feel (i.e., name their emotions) with the hope that identifying emotions will help them cope. Although lay some psychological theories posit emotion naming should facilitate subsequent regulation, there is little research directly testing this question. Here, we report on two experimental studies test evoked by aversive images impacts regulation of those emotions. In study 1 (N = 80), participants were randomly assigned into one four between-subjects conditions which either (i) passively observed images, (ii) named these made feel, (iii) regulated reappraising meaning or (iv) both Analyses self-reported negative affect revealed impeded via reappraisal. Participants who before reported feeling worse than without naming. Study 2 60) replicated findings a within-participants design, demonstrated also mindful acceptance, showed effects unrelated measure social desirability, thereby mitigating concern experimenter demand. Together, show impact opposes common intuitions: instead facilitating reappraisal constructing an instance specific category giving it may "crystalize" one's affective experience make more resistant modification. The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s42761-021-00036-y.

The theory of constructed emotions suggests that different psychological components, including core affect (mental and neural representations bodily changes), conceptualization (meaning-making based on prior experiences semantic knowledge), are involved in the formation emotions. However, little is known about their role experiencing In current study, we investigated how individual differences interoceptive sensibility emotional (as potential correlates these components) interact to moderate three important aspects experiences: intensity (strength emotion felt), arousal (degree activation), granularity (ability differentiate with precision). To this end, participants completed a series questionnaires assessing underwent two experience tasks, which included standardized material (emotion differentiation task; ED task) self-experienced episodes (day reconstruction method; DRM). Correlational analysis showed were related each other. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed independent factors referred as monitoring. Sensibility factor, interpreted beliefs accuracy an detecting internal physiological states, predicted higher for negative words. Monitoring tendency focus states individual, was negatively intensity. Additionally, scores more strongly associated greater well-being adaptability measures than scores. Our results indicate processes underlying contribute experiencing.
