In
the
past
several
decades,
research
on
emotional
development
has
flourished.
Scientists
have
made
progress
in
understanding
infants',
children's,
and
adults'
abilities
to
recognize,
communicate,
regulate
their
emotions.
However,
many
questions
remain
unanswered
or
only
partly
answered.
We
are
poised
move
from
descriptions
of
aspects
functioning
conceptualizing
studying
developmental
mechanisms
that
underlie
those
aspects.
The
gaps
our
knowledge
provide
numerous
opportunities
for
further
investigation.
With
this
special
issue
Developmental
Psychology,
we
aim

such
progress,

among
colleagues
at
beginning
careers.

It
has
long
been
claimed
that
certain
configurations
of
facial
movements
are
universally
recognized
as
emotional
expressions
because
they
evolved
to
signal
information
in
situations

challenges

our

last
decade
have
called
this
particular
evolutionary
hypothesis

doubt
by
studying
emotion
perception
