This paper presents an interpretation of stuttering behavior, based on the principles active inference framework. Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by speech disfluencies such as repetitions, prolongations, and blocks. The inference, theory predictive processing sentient can be used to conceptualize disruption in perception-action cycling underlying production. proposed here posits that arises from aberrant sensory precision prediction error dynamics, inhibiting syllable initiation. Relevant this theory, two hypothesized mechanisms are proposed: (1) mistiming (2) excessive attentional focus. Both highlight role neural oscillations, error, hierarchical integration framework also explains contextual variability behaviors, including adaptation effects fluency-inducing conditions. Reframing synaptopathy integrates neurobiological, psychological, behavioral dimensions, suggesting disruptions precision-weighting mediated neuromodulatory systems. perspective provides unified account sets stage for innovative research therapeutic approaches.

Bettinger, J. S., K. Friston. Conceptual Foundations of Physiological Regulation incorporating the Free Energy Principle & Self-Organized Criticality. NEUROSCI BIOBEHAV REV 23(x) 144-XXX, 2022. Since late nineteen-nineties, concept homeostasis has been contextualized within a broader class "allostatic" dynamics characterized by wider-berth causal factors including social, psychological and environmental entailments; fundamental nature integrated brain-body dynamics; plus role anticipatory, top-down constraints supplied intrinsic regulatory models. Many these evidentiary are integral in original descriptions homeostasis; subsequently integrated; and/or cite more-general operating principles self-organization. As result, allostasis may be generalized to larger category variational systems biology, engineering physics terms advances complex systems, statistical mechanics involving heterogenous (hierarchical/heterarchical, modular) like brain-networks internal milieu. This paper offers three-part treatment. 1) interpret "allostasis" emphasize relational foundation physiological stability; 2) adapt as "stability through change" include "return stability" 3) reframe model with conceptual criticality that licenses upgrade dynamics.

Abstract Suggestions about hunger can generate placebo effects on experiences. But, the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms are unknown. Here, we show in 255 women that expectancies, induced by suggestion-based interventions, determine sensations and economic food choices. Functional magnetic resonance imaging a subgroup ( n = 57/255) provides evidence strength of expecting to decrease moderates medial prefrontal cortex activation at time choice attenuates ventromedial (vmPFC) responses value. Dorsolateral linked interference resolution formally mediates hunger. A drift-diffusion model characterizes this effect showing suggestions bias participants’ choices how much they weigh tastiness against healthiness food, which further vmPFC–dlPFC psychophysiological interactions when participants expect decreased Thus, suggestion-induced beliefs shape addressing through cognitive regulation value computation within cortex.

A fundamental property of sensory systems is their ability to detect novel stimuli in the ambient environment. The auditory brain contains neurons that decrease response repetitive sounds but increase firing rate or deviant stimuli; difference between both responses known as stimulus-specific adaptation neuronal mismatch (nMM). Here, we tested effect microiontophoretic applications ACh on cortex (AC) anesthetized rats during an oddball paradigm, including cascade controls. Results indicate modulates nMM, affecting prediction error not repetition suppression, and this manifested predominantly infragranular cortical layers. differential standards, relative deviants (in terms averages variances), was consistent with representational sharpening accompanies precision errors. These findings suggest plays important role modulating signaling AC gating access these signals higher cognitive levels.

Despite the growing deployment of network representation to comprehend psychological phenomena, question whether and how networks can effectively describe effects interventions remains elusive. Network control theory, engineering study networked interventions, has recently emerged as a viable methodology characterize guide interventions. However, there is scarcity empirical studies testing extent which it be useful within context. In this paper, we investigate representative intervention experiment, use theory model predict its effect. Using data, showed that: (1) observed effect, in terms sensitivity specificity, relates regional theoretic metrics (average modal controllability), (2) size change following negatively correlates with whole-network topology that quantifies "ease" described by (control energy), (3) responses after predicted based on formal results from theory. These insights assert significant potential tool for investigating Drawing specific example overarching framework further elaborate conceptualization methodological considerations, future directions burgeoning field.

Abstract How individuals process and respond to uncertainty has important implications for cognition mental health. Here we use computational phenotyping examine individualised “uncertainty fingerprints” in relation neurometabolites trait anxiety humans. We introduce a novel categorical state-transition extension of the Hierarchical Gaussian Filter (HGF) capture implicit learning four-choice probabilistic sensorimotor reversal task by tracking beliefs about stimulus transitions. Using 7-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, measured baseline neurotransmitter levels primary motor cortex (M1). Model-based results revealed dynamic belief updating response environmental changes. further found region-specific relationships between M1 glutamate+ glutamine prediction errors volatility beliefs, revealing an neural marker High was associated with faster post-reversal responses. By integrating modelling neurochemical assessments, this study provides insights into neurocomputations that drive individual differences processing uncertainty.

Active inference under the Free Energy Principle has been proposed as an across-scales compatible framework for understanding and modelling behaviour self-maintenance. Crucially, a collective of active agents can, if they maintain group-level Markov blanket, constitute larger agent with generative model its own. This potential computational scale-free structures speaks to application self-organizing systems across spatiotemporal scales, from cells human collectives. Due difficulty reconstructing that explains emergent agents, there little research on this kind multi-scale inference. Here, we propose data-driven methodology characterising relation between dynamics constituent individual agents. We apply methods cognitive psychiatry, applicable well other types approaches. Using simple Multi-Armed Bandit task example, employ new ActiveInference.jl library Julia simulate who are equipped blanket. use sampling-based parameter estimation make inferences about agent, show is non-trivial relationship models constitute, even in setting. Finally, point number ways which might be applied better understand relations nested scales.
