The study of tick olfaction is relatively new compared to that insects, and the molecular mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Despite several potential chemosensory genes identified in multiple species, these are yet be validated through independent functional experiments. In this research, we cloned analyzed a microplusin-like gene, HlonML-1, investigated its role activities

Sexually dimorphic traits are common among mammals and specified during development through the deployment of sex-specific genetic programs. Because little is known about these programs, we investigated them using a resource gene expression profiles in males females throughout five organs (human, mouse, rat, rabbit, opossum) bird (chicken). We found that sex-biased varied considerably across species was often cell-type specific. Sex differences increased abruptly around sexual maturity instead increasing gradually organ development. Finally, evolved rapidly at level, with between evolutionary mechanisms used, but more slowly cellular same cell types being sexually species.

The female mosquito's remarkable ability to hunt humans and transmit pathogens relies on her unique biology. Here, we present the Mosquito Cell Atlas (MCA), a comprehensive single-nucleus RNA sequencing dataset of more than 367,000 nuclei from 19 dissected tissues adult male Aedes aegypti , providing cellular-level resolution mosquito We identify novel cell types expand our understanding sensory neuron organization chemoreceptors all tissues. Our analysis uncovers male-specific cells sexually dimorphic gene expression in antenna brain. In mosquitoes, find that glial brain, rather neurons, undergo most extensive transcriptional changes following blood feeding. findings provide insights into cellular basis behavior sexual dimorphism. Instances of multicellularity across the tree life have fostered evolution complex organs composed distinct cell types that cooperate, producing emergent biological functions. How originate is a fundamental evolutionary problem has eluded deep mechanistic and conceptual understanding. Here I propose cell- to organ-level transitions framework, whereby cooperative division labor originates becomes entrenched between through process functional niche creation, cell-type subfunctionalization, irreversible ratcheting interdependencies. Comprehending this transition hinges on explaining how these processes unfold molecularly in evolving populations. Recent single-cell transcriptomic studies analyses terminal fate specification indicate cellular functions are conferred by modular gene expression programs. These discrete components variation may be deployed or combined within cells introduce new properties into multicellular niches, partitioned establish labor. Tracing program at level single populations reveal toward organ complexity.

Chemosensory cells across the body of Drosophila melanogaster evaluate environment to prioritize certain behaviors. Previous mapping gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) on fly labellum identified a set in L-type sensilla that express Ionotropic Receptor 94e (IR94e), but impact IR94e GRNs behavior remains unclear. We used optogenetics and chemogenetics activate found they drive mild feeding suppression enhance egg laying. In vivo calcium imaging revealed respond strongly amino acids, including glutamate, plus co-receptors IR25a IR76b are required for acid detection. Furthermore, mutants show behavioral changes solutions containing increased consumption decreased Overall, our results suggest discourage encourage laying as part an important switch response chemical cues.

Sensory neurons must be reproducibly specified to permit accurate neural representation of external signals but also able change during evolution. We studied this paradox in the Drosophila olfactory system by establishing a single-cell transcriptomic atlas all developing antennal sensory lineages, including latent populations that normally undergo programmed cell death (PCD). This reveals transcriptional control is robust, imperfect, defining selective receptor expression. A second layer precision afforded intersection expression functionally-interacting subunits. third defined stereotyped PCD patterning, which masks promiscuous fated die and removes "empty" lacking receptors. Like choice, under lineage-specific control; promiscuity regulation leads previously-unappreciated heterogeneity neuronal numbers. Thus functional mature belies developmental noise might facilitate evolution pathways.

Immature dentate granule cells (imGCs) arising from adult hippocampal neurogenesis contribute to plasticity, learning and memory, but their evolutionary changes across species specialized features in humans remain poorly understood. Here we performed machine learning-augmented analysis of published single-cell RNA-sequencing datasets identified macaque imGCs with transcriptome-wide immature neuronal characteristics. Our cross-species comparisons among humans, monkeys, pigs, mice showed few shared (such as DPYSL5), mostly species-specific gene expression that converged onto common biological processes regulating development. We further human-specific transcriptomic demonstrated functional roles human imGC-enriched a family proton-transporting vacuolar-type ATPase subtypes development derived pluripotent stem cells. study reveals divergent patterns convergent the molecular characteristics species, highlighting importance conducting independent analyses for different species.

Abstract Small-bodied ectotherms are acutely vulnerable to temperature changes, but diverse thermotactic behaviours have contributed their ability inhabit broad climatic niches. Understanding how - and quickly these evolve outstanding biological questions that also relevant conservation. Among insects, Drosophila melanogaster is a preeminent ectothermic model for temperate sensing thermotaxis. However, little known about its temperature-related evolved in comparison closely related species. We thermo-profiled over 2400 larvae from eight species of different thermal habitats. Consistent with local adaptation, we found substantial variation preference fine-scale navigational amongst Agent-based modelling the larval thermotaxis circuit suggests it balance between cool warm avoidance circuits, rather than changes sensitivity, drive differences preference. Our findings highlight recurrent evolution an experimentally tractable cross-species system.
