Abstract Recently, in vivo optical imaging the second‐near‐infrared window (NIR‐II, 1000–1700 nm) that allows high spatiotemporal resolution and depth due to reduced photon scattering weak auto‐fluorescence has drawn more attention. Among various NIR‐II probes, lanthanide‐doped nanoparticles show several great advantages including abundant energy levels transitions for multi‐emissions, ultra‐stable emissions long‐term detection, long luminescence lifetime background‐free imaging. These merits have inspired researchers make efforts develop superior bio‐imaging bio‐sensing. In this review, luminescent absorption spectra of lanthanide ions are outlined, recent advances designing nanocrystals with optimized quantum yields summarized. Then their significant concerns sensing assembly disassembly, clearance, responsiveness lanthanide‐based discussed. Major challenges future opportunities using finally proposed direct new solutions interdisciplinary research.

A photo-responsive full-color lanthanide supramolecular switch was constructed from a synthetic 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA)-modified pillar[5]arene (H) complexing with ion (Ln3+ = Tb3+ and Eu3+) dicationic diarylethene derivative (G1) through noncovalent assembly. Benefiting the strong complexation between DPA Ln3+ 3 : 1 stoichiometric ratio, complex H/Ln3+ presented an emerging emission in aqueous organic phase. Subsequently, network polymer formed by further encapsulating G1via hydrophobic cavity of pillar[5]arene, which greatly contributed to increased intensity lifetime, also resulted formation light switch. Moreover, luminescence, especially white emission, achieved (CIE: 0.31, 0.32) dichloromethane 0.33) solutions adjustment different ratios Eu3+. Notably, photo-reversible luminescence properties assembly were tuned via alternant UV/vis irradiation due conformation-dependent photochromic energy transfer open/closed-ring diarylethene. Ultimately, prepared successfully applied anti-counterfeiting use intelligent multicolored writing inks, presents new opportunities for design advanced stimuli-responsive on-demand color tuning luminescent materials.
