Biocatalysts represent an efficient, highly selective and greener alternative to metal catalysts in both industry academia. In the last two decades, interest biocatalytic transformations has increased due urgent need for more sustainable industrial processes that comply with principles of green chemistry. Thanks recent advances biotechnologies, protein engineering Nobel prize awarded concept direct enzymatic evolution, synthetic toolbox expanded significantly. particular, implementation biocatalysts continuous flow systems attracted much attention, especially from industry. The advantages chemistry enable biosynthesis overcome well-known limitations “classic” catalysis, such as time-consuming work-ups enzyme inhibition, well difficult scale-up process intensifications. Moreover, biocatalysis provides access practical, economical pathways, important aspect future pharmaceutical companies if they want compete market while complying European Medicines Agency (EMA), Food Drug Administration (FDA) requirements. This review focuses on most use synthesis active ingredients (APIs), pharmaceuticals natural products, are discussed.

Abstract Biocatalysis is an established chemical synthesis technology that has by no means been restricted to research laboratories. The use of enzymes for organic evolved greatly from early development proof‐of‐concept – small batch production industrial scale. Different enzyme immobilization strategies contributed this success story. Recently, the hydrogel materials attracting great interest. Within review, we pay special attention recent developments in key emerging field research. Firstly, will briefly introduce concepts both biocatalysis and worlds. Then, list interesting publications link concepts. Finally, provide outlook comment on future perspectives further exploration hydrogels.

Abstract The concurrent operation of chemical and biocatalytic reactions in one pot is still a challenging task, and, particular for photocatalysts, examples besides simple cofactor recycling systems are rare. However, especially due to the complementary chemistry that two fields catalysis promote, their combination has potential unlock intriguing, unprecedented overall reactivities. Herein we demonstrate reduction photocatalytic oxidation process. Specifically, enantioselective sulfoxide using ( S )‐selective methionine reductases was coupled an unselective light‐dependent sulfoxidation. Protochlorophyllide established as new green photocatalyst Overall, cyclic deracemization process produce nonracemic sulfoxides achieved target compounds were obtained with excellent conversions (up 91 %) superb optical purity (>99 % ee ).
