Summary Food environments are directly linked to diets and health outcomes such as overweight, obesity, noncommunicable diseases. The digitalization of food is becoming a central issue in public health, yet little known about this emerging field. We performed systematic scoping review map the research on digital environment investigate how eight dimensions environment, according an established framework (availability, prices, vendor product properties, marketing regulation, accessibility, affordability, convenience, desirability), might be shifting context society. searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Web Science for studies published between 2000 2019, using search terms covering technology which yielded 13,580 unique records. Our analysis 357 shows that taking place all enabling emergence new forms buying selling food, online grocery shopping delivery, may changing availability foods affecting physical distance shops time allocated shopping. Systematic reviews identified indicated social media can influence choices, preferences consumption. findings suggest interconnected influencing one another, but impact nutrition unclear.

Abstract Background The current food system in England promotes a population diet that is high fat, sugar and salt (HFSS). To address this, the UK government has implemented legislation to restrict promotion of HFSS products prominent locations (e.g. store entrances, checkouts) qualifying retailers since October 2022. This study investigated perceived impact for affected stakeholders. Methods A pre-implementation rapid qualitative evaluation stakeholder interviews. One hundred eight stakeholders participated including 34 consumers, 24 manufacturers retailers, 22 local authority enforcement officers 28 academic charitable health representatives. participatory conference was used enable policy recommendations be confirmed by Results Stakeholders ‘good first step’ towards improving but recognised this needed considered amongst range long-term obesity policies. Areas further support were identified these are presented as six successful implementation legislation: (1) provide free central calculator, (2) refine enhance intent clarity, (3) conduct robust assess intended unintended outcomes, (4) greater smaller businesses, (5) ring-fenced resources authorities (6) create communicate roadmap health. Abstract Background Poor diet is the leading preventable risk factor contributing to burden of disease globally and in Australia, inequitably distributed. As price healthy foods a perceived barrier improved diets, evidence on cost affordability current (unhealthy) recommended (healthy, more equitable sustainable) diets required support policy action. Methods This study applied Healthy Diets ASAP (Australian Standardised Affordability Pricing) methods protocol measure cost, differential for reference household Queensland, Australia. Food prices were collected 18 randomly selected locations stratified by area socioeconomic disadvantage remoteness. Diet was calculated three income categories. Results Surprisingly, would 20% less than Queensland as whole. Households spent around 60% their food budget discretionary choices (that is, those not health that are high saturated fat, added sugar, salt and/or alcohol). families need spend 23% diets. However, be affordable low or very remote areas, costing 30 35% median respectively. The government supplements due SARS-CoV-2 pandemic improve 29%. Conclusions Study findings highlight while one affecting consumer choice, other drivers such taste, convenience, advertising availability important. Nevertheless, found unaffordable low-income likely experiencing stress, irrespective where they live Queensland. Policy actions, increasing 10% tax between basic healthy, unhealthy supplementing incomes vulnerable households, especially help equity sustainability, wellbeing all.

Background Reducing meat consumption could bring health and environmental benefits, but there is little research to date on effective interventions achieve this. A non-randomised controlled intervention study was used evaluate whether prominent positioning of meat-free products in the aisle associated with a change weekly mean sales products. Methods findings Weekly data were obtained from 108 stores: 20 stores that moved selection 26 into newly created bay within 88 matched control stores. The primary outcome analysis hierarchical negative binomial model compare changes (units) sold versus during main period (Phase I: February 2019 April 2019). Interrupted time series also effects Phase I intervention. Moreover, 8 enhanced August onwards II intervention) by adding second aisle, which evaluated following same analytical methods. During intervention, (units/store/week) decreased (approximately −6%) (−5%) without significant differences (incidence rate ratio [IRR] 1.01 [95% CI 0.95–1.07]. Sales increased significantly more (+31%) compared (+6%; IRR 1.43 1.30–1.57]), mostly due burgers, mince, sausages. Consistent results observed interrupted analyses where effect Conclusions Prominent supermarket not reducing products, successfully alternatives longer term. preregistered protocol ( https://osf.io/qmz3a/ ) completed fully available before analysis.

Background Previous product placement trials in supermarkets are limited scope and outcome data collected. This study assessed the effects on store-level sales, household-level purchasing, dietary behaviours of a healthier supermarket layout. Methods findings is prospective matched controlled cluster trial with 2 intervention components: (i) new fresh fruit vegetable sections near store entrances (replacing smaller displays at back) frozen vegetables repositioned to entrance aisle, plus (ii) removal confectionery from checkouts aisle ends opposite. In this pilot study, was implemented for 6 months 3 discount England. Three control stores were sales customer profiles neighbourhood deprivation. Women customers aged 18 45 years, loyalty cards, assigned ( n = 62) or group 88) their primary store. The registration number NCT03518151. Interrupted time series analysis showed that increases fruits greater than predicted (1.71 standard deviations (SDs) (95% CI 0.45, 2.96), P 0.01) follow-up (2.42 SDs (0.22, 4.62), 0.03), equivalent approximately 6,170 9,820 extra portions per store, week, respectively. proportion purchasing week rose among participants compared (0.2% versus −3.0%, 0.22; 1.7% −3.5%, 0.05, respectively). Store lower (−1.05 (−1.98, −0.12), 0.03) (−1.37 (−2.95, 0.22), 0.09), 1,359 1,575 fewer respectively; no differences observed purchasing. Changes variables predominantly expected direction health benefit. Intervention implementation not within research team, could be randomised. It and, therefore, powered detect an effect. Conclusions Healthier layouts can improve nutrition profile likely household quality. Placing should considered alongside policies limit prominent unhealthy foods. Abstract Background Supermarkets are the primary source of food for many people yet their full potential as a setting to encourage healthy dietary-related behaviours remains underutilised. Sharing experiences from research groups who have worked with supermarket chains evaluate strategies that promote eating could improve efficiency building such relationships and enhance design quality future studies. Methods A collective case study approach was used synthesise engaging sustaining collaborations national test effectiveness health-focused in-store interventions. The narrative covers studies conducted in three high-income countries: Australia, Netherlands United Kingdom. Results We distilled our lessons learned into six recommendations conducting high public health commercial chains. These include: (i) using personal contacts, knowledge activities executive management establish partnership allowing time build trust; (ii) using scientifically robust designs appropriate sample size calculations; (iii) formalising data exchange arrangements allocating adequate resource extraction re-categorisation; (iv) assessing effects at individual/households level where possible; (v) designing mixed-methods process evaluation measure intervention fidelity, dose unintended consequences; (vi) ensuring scientific independence through formal contract agreements. Conclusions Our working non-financial partnerships be useful other looking develop implement an efficient manner. Further evidence real-life interventions is necessary identify sustainable can population diet maintain outcomes.
