Abstract Insects rely heavily on sampling information from their environment for survival and fitness. Different sensory channels with dedicated downstream neural substrates are programmed to fine tune these signals translate them into usable instructions mediate complex behaviors. Sensory can also be learned stored as memories that influence decisions in the future. The learning of unimodal signals, especially olfaction, has been studied extensively different conditioning paradigms insects. Using Drosophila melanogaster model our work, we first investigated differences efficiencies aversive associative visual olfactory using cues innately very attractive, such blue or green light well food odors found fruits yeast. We then combined presentation stimuli during training study effect bimodal integration performance. When trained unimodally, flies did not easily learn stimuli, but when bimodally, they developed a significant short-term memory after single trial. suppressed phototaxis response near abolishment. However, similar enhance some cases, even caused reduction strength. An enhancement was only seen weak long-term retrieved 24h. Our demonstrates is always synergistic, conditional upon paradigm inherent abilities modalities involved.

Abstract Originally a genetic model organism, the experimental use of Drosophila melanogaster has grown to include quantitative behavioral analyses, sophisticated perturbations neuronal function, and detailed sensory physiology. A highlight these developments can be seen in context vision, where pioneering studies have uncovered fundamental generalizable principles processing. Here we begin with an overview vision-guided behaviors common methods for probing visual circuits. Abstract Drosophila larvae are an established model system for studying the mechanisms of innate and simple forms learned behaviour.
