Introduction Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are increasingly promoted as cost-effective, and environmentally friendly source of protein in animal nutrition. However, there is limited information about farmers' adoption rates the factors influencing their decisions Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This article assesses livestock actual potential BSFL determinants decisions. Methods In this paper, we used treatment effect framework approach on data collected from 1,885 fish, poultry, pig smallholder farmers five cities four West Central African countries, including Kinshasa Bukavu Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Accra Ghana, Bamako Mali, Niamey Niger. Results discussion The results show that 20 percent surveyed aware a feed, rate percent. analysis showed could quadruple if all were aware. result suggests successful awareness creation can boost BSFL, which currently stands at should target educated with access to group membership, credit, extension services, diversified income sources influence adopt feed.

Insect larval frass has been proposed as a fertilizer and amendment, but methods for testing its effects on plants are poorly developed need standardization. We obtained different types of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) via the factorial combination (a) two insect diets, follows: G (Gainesville = 50% wheat bran, 30% alfalfa meal, 20% maize meal) W (43% sheep whey + 57% seeds); (b) thermal treatments: NT untreated T treated at 70 °C 1 h. tested germination cress (Lepidium sativum L.) Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae, Linnaeus, 1978), commonly known as the black soldier fly (BSF), is a saprophytic insect, which in recent years has attracted significant attention from both scientific community and industry. The unrestrained appetite of larvae, ability to forage on various organic waste, rapid growth low environmental impact its breeding made it one insect species bred an industrial scale, hope producing fodder or other ingredients for animals. variety research related this shown that feed production not only benefit use. H. many features properties could be interest point view industries. Biomass utilization, chitin chitosan source, biogas, biodiesel production, entomoremediation, antimicrobial peptides, fertilizer potential wastes, are just some uses. This review brings together work four study into illucens. It summarizes current state knowledge introduces characteristics may helpful managing breeding, well use agro-industrial fields. Knowledge gaps under-studied areas were also highlighted, help identify future directions.

Abstract The black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens ) is used in sustainable processing of many types organic waste. However, waste being decomposed by BSF produces strong odors, hindering more widespread application. odor components and how they are produced have yet to be characterized. We found that digestion food significantly alters the microbial flora, based on metagenomic analyses, generated, as shown thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis. Inoculation with decreased production volatile sulfur compounds (dimethyl disulfide dimethyl trisulfide), which known released during methionine cysteine metabolism Lactobacillus Enterococcus bacteria. inoculation changed abundance diversity overall. These findings may help optimizing use for deodorization composting

Although options for CW degradation have been explored, biological treatment with black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) not reported. This study evaluated the growth and composition BSFL in four experimental diets under different conditions. Results show that use allows larval development weight gain, also, conversion into biomass was up 0.215. Diets ED3 (fresh CW, 38 °C) ED4 room temperature) allowed higher accumulation (final 0.285 g); highest fat (12 % than control) observed (up 45.57 %), which had less protein. Moreover, amounts saturated fatty acids are generated. highlights importance an appropriate pretreatment designed specific waste control desired by-products.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the leading causes cancer-related mortality worldwide, characterised by poor prognosis and limited responsiveness to chemotherapy. There a need for new more effective anticancer agents. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent promising class biomolecules this purpose. Naturally occurring in innate immune system, these can also exert cytotoxic effects against cells, earning them designation "anticancer peptides" (ACPs). They have potential be viable support current chemotherapy schedules due their selectivity cells minor propensity induce chemoresistance cells. Insects are an excellent source AMPs. Introduction The black soldier fly is considered the most promising insect species for mass production; however, information on effects of handling, which unavoidable during experimental trials and rearing practices, still limited. Materials methods To address this gap, three different manipulation intensities were tested 100 6-day-old larvae per replica (6 replicates/treatments) fed Gainesville diet: (1) hard-handled (HH), underwent continuous until end larval stage, (2) soft-handled (SH), manipulated after appearance first prepupa, (3) no-handled (NH), remained untouched. Every 4 days from beginning to manipulations lasted 30 min occurred under laboratory conditions (20°C). During sampling operations, at least randomly extracted, washed, dried, weight-mimicked. At all boxes untouched adult emergency rate sex ratio evaluated dead flies. Data statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS V20.0.0 software significance level was p < 0.05. Results stage 8.2 both HH SH ( > 0.05). Despite being manipulated, no difference also observed in final weight (HH, 160 mg; SH, 150 0.05) survival 96.2%; 94.5%; did not influence bioconversion capacity (bioconversion efficiency corrected residue: HH, 14.3%; 12.91%; reduction rate: 58.4%; 55.9%; waste index: 7.28%/day; 7.25%/day; Finally, development time larva (about 20.7; 0.05), (NH: 92.8%; SH: 89.5%; HH: 82.7%) (~1.2% male flies) affected by handling Discussion In conclusion, procedures used current study life history traits fly.
