Abstract Reminiscence‐based interventions focus on the recall of autobiographical memories and reflective reasoning about these remembered experiences. This study assessed effect a three‐session, positive‐memory version cognitive‐reminiscence therapy (CRT) psychological resources mental well‐being young adults. The participants ( N = 62, M age 24.6 [ SD 3.1], 71% females) were randomised to CRT or wait‐list. Psychological (self‐esteem, self‐efficacy, meaning in life optimism), (depression, anxiety stress symptoms) theorised change processes (automatic negative thoughts, awareness narrative identity cognitive reappraisal) assessed. results showed group was significantly higher at post‐CRT d 0.75–0.80) follow‐up 0.52–0.87) post‐intervention 0.71–1.30) 0.64–0.98). hypotheses regarding supported. Anticipated pleasure, (schemas positive self-esteem, self-efficacy, meaning in life, optimism), (depression, anxiety, stress symptoms) theorised change processes (automatic negative thoughts, awareness narrative identity) assessed. Relative group, group reported significantly higher pleasure (d 0.76–0.93) optimism (d's 0.58–0.99) at post-CRT follow-up, lower depressive symptoms follow-up 0.56–0.67). Findings life automatic thinking partially replicated. replicates effectiveness this intervention for improving such as self-worth, confidence symptoms, indicates additional may serve standalone intervention, an adjunct "memory booster" focused future related reward.

Despite the established effectiveness of reminiscence-based interventions for depression, little research exists into pathways through which specific reminiscence functions are related to depressive symptoms. Drawing on theory mechanisms change in cognitive-reminiscence therapy, current study tests hypothesised indirect associations adaptive integrative and instrumental with symptoms whether these relationships might differ among younger older adults. Questionnaires were completed by a large community sample Australian population. Multiple mediation models tested two groups: adults (n = 730, M age 52.24, SD=9.84) 725, age= 73.59, SD=6.29). Results consistent across groups, indicating that there was direct relationship between symptoms, but is indirectly associated meaning life, self-esteem, optimism, primary control self-efficacy. This provides support constructs underlying proposed therapy treatment suggests similar

ABSTRACTReminiscence-based psychotherapies have been demonstrated to robust effects on a range of therapeutic outcomes. However, little research has conducted the immediate guided activities they are composed of, or how these might differ dependent type reminiscence. The current study utilised controlled experimental design, whereby 321 young adults (mean age = 25.5 years, SD 3.0) were randomised one four conditions online reminiscence activity: problem-solving (successful coping experiences), identity (self-defining events contributing meaningful and continuous personal identity), bitterness revival (negative adverse events), control condition (any memory from their past). Participants recalled autobiographical memories congruent with condition, answered questions facilitate reflection memories. results indicated that caused significant improvements in self-esteem, meaning life, self-efficacy affect, whereas no found conditions. Problem-solving also small effect increasing perceptions life narrative/s. Differences between did not appear be explained by positive-valence These provide evidence for specific adaptive types adults.KEYWORDS: Reminiscence therapycognitive-reminiscence therapyautobiographical memoryyoung adultswell-beingself-concept AcknowledgementsThe authors thank participants time interest, Deakin University ethics review, Luke Barisic design website. The reminiscence functions scale (RFS) is a 43-item self-report instrument designed to assess the use of for different functions. This study aims, on one hand, analyze factorial structure and psychometric properties RFS and, other, examine relationship between mental health. measures depressive symptomology, despair, life satisfaction were administered sample persons over age sixty (n = 364). After eliminating three conflictive items from original scale, confirmatory factor analysis results present comprising eight traditional factors adequate reliability scores (from 0.73 0.87). Using structural equation modeling, we find that these are organized in second-order (self-positive, self-negative, prosocial). Results show self-positive relates negatively self-negative positively with symptoms health problems. These results, confirm useful Spanish older adults three-factor model better predictor than alternative four-factor model.
