Abstract
The
origins
of
resting-state
functional
MRI
(rsfMRI)
signal
fluctuations
remain
debated.
Recent
evidence
shows
coupling
between
global
cortical
rsfMRI
signals
and
cerebrospinal
fluid
inflow
in
the
fourth
ventricle,
increasing
during
sleep
decreasing
with
Alzheimer’s
disease
(AD)
progression,
potentially
reflecting
brain
clearance
mechanisms.
However,
existence
more
complex
brain-ventricle
modes
their
relationship
to
cognitive
decline
remains
unexplored.
Analyzing
599
minimally-preprocessed
scans
from
163
elderly
participants
across
AD
spectrum,
we
identified
distinct
that
differentiate
groups
correlate
scores.
Beyond
known
anti-phase
ventricles
—more
frequent
cognitively
normal
controls—
discovered
additional
where
specific
areas
temporarily
align
ventricle
signals.
At
level,
these
form
canonical
networks,
such
as
Default
Mode
Network,
which
occurs
less
or
Frontoparietal
correlates
positively
memory
direct
link
challenges
common
practice
removing
CSF
components
analyses
questions
origin
forming
may
reflect
region-specific
patterns.
These
findings
provide
new
insights
into
mechanisms

dysfunction

Analysis
and
interpretation
of
studies
on
cognitive
affective
dysregulation
often
draw
upon
the
network
paradigm,
especially
Triple
Network
Model,
which
consists
default
mode
(DMN),
frontoparietal
(FPN),
salience
(SN).
DMN
activity
is
primarily
dominant
during
leisure
self-monitoring
processes.

FPN

Decades

Functional
connectivity
(FC)
is
conventionally
defined
by
measuring
the
similarity
between
brain
signals
from
two
regions.
The
technique
has
become
widely
adopted
in
analysis
of
functional
magnetic
resonance
imaging
(fMRI)
data,
where
it
provided
cognitive
neuroscientists
with
abundant
information
on
how
regions
interact
to
support
complex
cognition.
However,
past
decade
notion
"connectivity"
expanded
both
complexity
and
heterogeneity
its
application
neuroscience,
resulting
greater
difficulty
interpretation,
replication,
cross-study
comparisons.

this
paper,
we
begin
canonical
notions
then
introduce
recent
methodological
developments
that
either
estimate
some
alternative

extend

Abstract
Approaching
the
30th
anniversary
of
discovery
resting
state
functional
magnetic
resonance
imaging
(rsfMRI)
connectivity,
we
reflect
on
impact
this
neuroimaging
breakthrough
field
child
and
adolescent
psychiatry.
The
study
intrinsic
brain
architecture
that
rsfMRI
affords
across
a
wide
range
ages
abilities
has
yielded
numerous
key
insights.
For
example,
now
know
many
neurodevelopmental
conditions
are
associated
with
more
widespread
circuit
alterations
multiple
large-scale
networks
than
previously
suspected.
emergence
population
neuroscience
effective
data-sharing
initiatives
have
made
large
datasets
publicly
available,
providing
sufficient
power
to
begin
identify
brain-based
subtypes
within
heterogeneous
clinical
conditions.
Nevertheless,
several
methodological
theoretical
challenges
must
still
be
addressed

promises
personalized

particular,
incomplete
understanding
physiological
mechanisms
driving
developmental
