Acculturation describes the cultural and psychological changes resulting from intercultural contact. Here, we use concepts "cultural evolution" to better understand processes of acculturation. Cultural evolution researchers view change as an evolutionary process, allowing them borrow tools methods biology. mechanisms such conformity (copying numerical majority), anti-conformity minority), prestige bias famous individuals), payoff successful people), vertical transmission your parents) can cause people adopt elements other cultures and/or conserve their heritage. We explore how these might create distinct acculturation strategies, shaping diversity over long-term. This theoretical integration pave way for a more sophisticated understanding pervasive shifts occurring in many ethnically diverse societies, notably by identifying conditions that empower minority-group members, often marginalized, significantly influence majority group society.

Personal identity and social identification processes can be challenging for adolescents belonging to an ethnic minority, who have cope with the acculturation task of navigating several (and often conflictual) alternatives put forth by their cultural heritage community destination society. Because tasks are embedded in core domains adolescents' life, this three-wave longitudinal study minority (N = 244, 43.4% male; M

Abstract Adolescents’ identity processes and their levels of well-being are likely to be intertwined. On the one hand, how adolescents cope with core developmental task forming has important implications for well-being. other experiencing a condition can help consolidate identity. This longitudinal study adopted multidimensional culturally sensitive perspective unravel (i.e., commitment, in-depth exploration, reconsideration commitment) in two domains educational interpersonal identity) were developmentally related multiple indicators positive physical health, subjective, psychological, social well-being) different cultural backgrounds. Participants 1396 ( M age = 15.73, SD 1.23, 49.93% females; 20.89% migrant background) who completed questionnaires at four-time points across year. Results cross-lagged models confirmed reciprocal associations between commitment all its facets. The nuanced picture exploration dimensions highlighted importance adopting multi-dimensional on domain-specific approach Multigroup analyses indicated that domain relevant, especially background. Overall, this highlights centrality adolescents’ adaptation dynamic loop influences youth development.

Abstract As Western societies become more ethnically and culturally diverse, understanding the acculturation of immigrant youth is essential for fostering social cohesion. How cultural identity formation ethnic minority adolescents relates to their academic, social, psychological adjustment an important as yet unresolved research question. This study examined what extent identifying with heritage and/or host culture individual resource or risk factor in Germany. A random sample 15–17-year-olds ( N = 1992; M age_w1 15.3 years, SD 0.64; 44.5% girls; 44.7% students background) was assessed twice: at end 9th 10th grade. Academic performance three dimensions social/psychological (school attachment, self-esteem, life satisfaction) were examined. Results showed that biculturalism modal identification pattern. Contrary expectations, did not differ systematically perceived distance from majority culture. Multivariate structural equation modeling revealed both can be developmental resources, but effects are dependent on dimension adjustment; only proved a cumulative school attachment. The domain specificity findings challenges generalization claims predominant theories.

Abstract Cultural identity formation is a complex developmental task that influences adolescents’ adjustment. However, less known about individual variations in trajectories of cultural processes and how they relate to youth psychosocial outcomes. Using person-centered approach, this study investigated patterns change over year exploration resolution, respectively, among ethnically diverse adolescents Italy. The sample included 173 high school students ( M age = 15 yrs, SD 0.62, range 14–17; 58.4% female; 26% immigrant background) who had participated the Identity Project , school-based intervention targeting ethnic-racial development. Longitudinal latent profile analysis revealed only one for exploration, whereas four unique profiles resolution emerged (“stable low,” “stable average,” “increase low-to-average,” high-to-higher”). Overall, resolution-increase reported best findings highlight heterogeneity benefits an increased sense clarity concerning one’s positive functioning.

Results showed low classmates chose larger distance. Additionally, scores in were associated higher victimization cyberbullying. contrast, family more involved as bullies victims Male likely be victimized than females. This underlines how peers works buffer interfacing strangers, adjusting maintained them, protective factor against aggressive adolescence. provides new opportunities psychologists understanding psychological dynamics shape interactions among adolescents.

Identity formation constitutes a key developmental process during adolescence. This study extends previous research on ethnic identity development by focusing the religious of Muslim youth in Germany. Using longitudinal waitlist control group design, we tested if minority students (N = 128; Mage 13.43, SDage 0.84, 43% female) who participated an 8-week school-based intervention, Project, would show greater exploration their identity, leading to increases resolution and turn resulting better psychological adjustment (i.e., higher self-esteem, less depressive symptoms) global identity. Preliminary analyses revealed that our sample are characterized high adolescence, represented values resolution. Latent-change score models demonstrated changes youth’s predicted resolution, self-acceptance sense However, showed clear did not indicate affective somatic symptoms. We conclude for religion seems constitute important part while promoting positive adjustment. Our results multicultural approaches schools – such as Project should only respond students’ identities but also more explicitly cater identities.
