Quantifying first-year student musicians’ ‘calling’: Initial implications for professional preparation curriculum design DOI

Over the last decade, vocation preparation formal and informal education has been included in higher music programs with purpose to responsibly supplement students’ technical performance skills graduate sustainable musicians. Such curriculum reform is continually met mixed responses by students faculty despite increased precarity of profession within current global context. This study evolved from one vocational educator’s observation that student resistance potentially based one’s passion for music, capacity resilience self-discipline, perceived calling pursue a profession. From 2018 2022, first-year an Australian metropolitan conservatoire enrolled unit were invited participate online survey answering open closed questions related their professional activity outlook, personal perceptions calling, passion, resilience, discipline. Statistical thematic analysis results compared similarly designed prior musicians found more than two-thirds professionally active. All yearly cohorts consistently strongly agreed they passionate about possessed high resilience. The year 2020 demonstrated insight pandemic impact viewing future trepidation, yet highest Calling, literature further served interpret data subsequently suggested pedagogies adopting whole-of-program approach enabled contagion effect alignment values, identities.

Professional musicians with strong identities in music may also have a high degree of their identities. Accordingly, rigid identification work be problematic for musicians, particularly when forces beyond control change circumstances. In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews 10 singing teachers, representing subset professional and used interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore the ways which they enacted The framework musical action was interpret findings, revealing dynamic, embodied, situated complexity participants’ Music had existential salience accounts nine participants. This chapter draws upon 26 survey responses and four interviews with musicians from our two partner orchestras, in which the reflect on their training extent to this prepared them for professional orchestral playing. These exploratory findings raise questions about role of conservatoires supporting or inhibiting innovation profession, highlight challenges work-life balance that were altered by pandemic, show how themselves can be agents change. The second half will report a conversation between directors at they respond help set agenda future research innovation. This study examines how cultural workers in the music sector coped with COVID-19-induced lockdown, and coping is associated growth personal strength during pandemic. We conducted an online survey 1 year into pandemic among members of Creo, Norway’s largest trade union sector. Respondents ( N = 658) were to a large degree engaged fight coping. This study uses identity process theory to understand the social–psychological processes that motivate individuals construct an in which music, singing, and singing teaching feature prominently. We conducted reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 10 Australian teachers (with average age 60) how they enacted principles construction maintenance. Findings were captured two themes: (1) ‘It has just been music’: Living a musical life is my destiny; (2) ‘I know value’: Achieving goals music motivating. Participants’ consistent engagement across lifespan satisfied continuity positive distinctiveness. Este estudio explora las experiencias de songwriting durante la pandemia COVID-19, con el fin comprender cómo circunstancias excepcionales afectaron creatividad y proceso compositivo los músicos. Se realizó un fenomenológico cinco participantes diferentes especialidades, residentes en Perú, utilizando entrevistas semiestructuradas. Las transcripciones se codificaron analizaron temáticamente. Como resultado, generaron dos categorías teóricas: a) procesos uso herramientas tecnológicas para creación musical b) impacto práctica del songwriting. identificaron similitudes composición variantes influyó temáticas abordadas. documentadas este enriquecen conocimiento teórico sobre etapas canciones. Además, ofrecen a músicos afrontar futuras adversidades, fortaleciendo su resiliencia adaptación ante desafíos.
