Abstract The experience of positive intrinsic rewards (enjoyment) from physical activity (PA) is known to promote PA habit formation and maintenance. Negative (stress reduction) may also be associated with habit, particularly during a major stressor when individual‐level anxiety higher. Multi‐level models tested the following hypotheses using weekly survey data convenience sample (snowball sampling) adults ( N = 580; 91% White, 77% Female, mean age 41 years) over 8 weeks first COVID‐19 lockdown in UK: negative will independently statistically more strongly related strength frequency than rewards; and, relationship between stronger for those higher anxiety. Counter hypotheses, were time (fixed effect 0.27, p < 0.001 versus fixed −0.05, 0.23, respectively), there was main (but no interaction rewards) on −0.03, 0.03). findings suggest that interventions aimed at increasing maintaining might best focus cultivating PA, even presence substantial stressors
