During lockdowns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals have experienced poor sleep quality and regularity, changes in lifestyle behaviours, heightened depression anxiety. However, inter-relationship relative strength of those behaviours on mental health outcomes is still unknown. We collected data between 12 May 15 June 2020 from 1048 South African adults (age: 32.76 ± 14.43 years; n = 767 female; 473 students) using an online questionnaire. Using structural equation modelling, we investigated how insomnia symptoms, exercise intensity/frequency sitting/screen-use (sedentary screen-use) interacted to predict depressive anxiety-related symptoms before during lockdown. also controlled for effects sex student status. Irrespective lockdown, (a) more severe greater sedentary screen-use predicted anxiety (b) were mediated by insomnia. The physical activity outcomes, however, only significant Low symptom severity, which turn increased symptoms. Overall, relationships study variables amplified findings highlight importance maintaining reducing promote better health.

The purpose of the systematic review was to identify, evaluate, and synthesize evidence from available published literature examining impact coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on youth physical activity (PA). A conducted for years 2020-2021. Published articles were searched in eight databases. Inclusion criteria included: availability full-text, written English language, reported quantitative or qualitative results original secondary data PA COVID-19 related factors among (ages 5-17 years). standard quality assessment tool assessed risk bias included articles. search retrieved 2,899 with 51 ultimately meeting inclusion criteria. majority (65 %) investigated change before during pandemic. Most indicated an overall decrease levels differences observed sub-populations (e.g., age, sex gender), type, location. Findings suggest pandemic-related closures hindered participation due a high reliance school- sport-based PA. Programmatic strategies breaks, active curriculum, free online activities/lessons) should include aligning intervention measures geared towards evolving ongoing promotion based latest findings.

Objective To examine changes in the prevalence of six key chronic disease risk factors (the “Big 6”), from before (2019) to during (2021) COVID-19 pandemic, among a large and geographically diverse sample adolescents, whether differences over time are associated with lockdown status gender. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting Three Australian states (New South Wales, Queensland Western Australia) spanning 3000 km. Participants 983 adolescents (baseline M age =12.6, SD=0.5, 54.8% girl) drawn control group Health4Life Study. Primary outcomes The physical inactivity, poor diet (insufficient fruit vegetable intake, high sugar-sweetened beverage discretionary food intake), sleep, excessive recreational screen time, alcohol use tobacco use. Results (prevalence ratios (PR)=1.06, 95% CI=1.03 1.11), insufficient intake (PR=1.50, CI=1.26 1.79), (PR=4.34, CI=2.82 6.67) (PR=4.05 CI=1.86 8.84) increased 2-year period, increasing more girls (PR=2.34, CI=1.19 4.62). sleep declined across full (PR=0.74, CI=0.68 0.81); however, (PR=1.24, CI=1.10 1.41). (PR=0.61, CI=0.64 0.83) consumption (PR=0.73, reduced those subjected stay-at-home orders, compared not lockdown. Conclusion Lifestyle behaviours, particularly diet, inactivity prevalent adolescents. Young people must be supported find ways improve or maintain their health, regardless course pandemic. Targeted approaches support groups that may disproportionately impacted, such as adolescent girls, needed. Trial registration number New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12619000431123)

Abstract Background The coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) and universal mitigation strategies have fundamentally affected peoples’ lives worldwide, particularly during the first two years of pandemic. Reductions in physical activity (PA) increased mental health (MH) problems among children youth been observed. This systematic review meta-analysis investigated relationship between COVID‐19 Methods Four electronic databases (EMBASE, PsycINFO, PubMed, Web Science) were systematically searched to identify studies that (1) examined PA MH (aged 2–24 old) (2) published peer-reviewed journals English January 2020 December 2021. Relationships aspects (i.e., negative positive psychological responses) at different age ranges those with disabilities or chronic conditions (DCC) synthesized. Meta-analyses also performed for eligible determine pooled effect size. Results A total 58 eventually included variable categorization, 32 meta-analyses. Our synthesis results showed greater participation was strongly related lower responses anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, fatigue, problems) higher general well-being vigor) COVID-19. pattern strength relations outcomes varied across conditions, preschoolers DCC receiving less attention existing research. Meta-analysis magnitude associations (Fisher’s z = − 0.198, p < 0.001) 0.170, weak. These linked participants, study quality, reporting PA-related information. Conclusions deteriorated COVID-19 pandemic closely associated each other. For post-COVID-19 era, additional research on age- condition-specific relationships from a comprehensive perspective is warranted. (Word count: 344 words).
