Abstract Poor seedling emergence often limits the success of direct seeding in ecological restoration. New techniques for maximising seed use efficiency and are needed to help meet global targets nature repair UN Decade on Restoration. Extruded pellets widely used agriculture represent a promising advancement seed‐based However, extruded must be optimised diverse suites native species that possess range sizes morphotypes. We investigated how mass affects performance plant seeds (total % emergence) when encapsulated designed revegetation. Two glasshouse trials were undertaken using from 30 Australian species. In Trial 1, we centre determined relationship between emergence. 2, nearer periphery whether position (central vs. peripheral) affected subset 10 small‐seeded both trials, was compared an optimal, bare‐seeded control identify any barriers encapsulation under well‐watered conditions. centrally encapsulated, generally higher controls relative pelleted seeds. predicted pellet ( R 2 = 0.32, p 0.002), such larger‐seeded tended have than smaller‐seeded encapsulating (relative centre) resulted average 28‐fold increase all For half trialled, equivalent controls. Synthesis applications : Collectively, our results demonstrate: (1) positive central‐encapsulation, (2) can significantly improved positioned periphery. Translation these findings into practice optimise outcomes with different sized nuanced germination requirements.

Abstract Aims Indicators that can provide information during the early stages of restoration are very useful for predicting outcomes. We posed following questions: Can savanna outcomes be affected by initial functional‐group composition? Are there functional groups that, when established early, prevent colonization invasive grasses, trigger a successful trajectory, and used as indicators success? Location Brazilian (cerrado) in Central Brazil (14°07′2.54″ S, 47°38′30.36″ W). Methods 110 plots spanning naturally occurring range species composition areas had been restored through direct seeding. looked different compositions groups: perennial annual short‐lived shrubs, grasses. measured vegetation cover over two years evaluated effects on successional trajectory plots. Results The dominant group determined assembly trajectory. Short‐lived fast‐growing were replaced species, indicating fast turnover. Invasive grass remained stable time, demonstrating once they establish dominate an area, alternative state is achieved. Conclusions Our results demonstrate importance introducing mixture restoring savannas severely disturbed areas. Research Highlights: One of the ways to improve quality a seedlot used in forest nursery is grading seed by colour. Background and Objectives: The study intended for forest’s engineers owners because it offers an alternative solution seeds improvement before sowing. success establishment program mainly depends on Forest Reproductive Material. At this time usual practices during processing size. This causes lot controversy about possible reduction genetic diversity through directional selection. Materials Methods: Aiming effect coat colour seedling performance, one-year old container seedlings Pinus sylvestris L. were planted at post-fire site. Seedlings produced from three fractions, previously graded visible wavelength range standard optical separator, plus control obtained without separation Results: different fractions performed differently first growing season after planting field. light fraction grow better height, but those dark resulted with highest survival rate. Light-dark seeds, which constitute largest group initial sample absolute weight, lowest growth rates survival. good results showed control, both survival, indicate weak field also need more comprehensive studies future.

The renewal and sustainability of the forest stands are attained through regeneration. There three basic methods to regenerate high stands: natural regeneration, direct seeding, planting. This study reviews factors affecting regeneration effect stand structure on Overall, success can be quite variable due edaphic climatic conditions, seed losses and/or seedling mortality. silvicultural system is relevant choice method. Natural used in selection irregular shelterwood systems whereas seeding planting uniform clear-cut systems. In former, stocking management primordial while for latter species selection, predators spontaneous vegetation control.

An important strategy for meeting global landscape restoration goals is nursery production of high-quality seedlings. Growing seedlings with attributes that promote post-planting survival and growth can be dramatically influenced by the container system. In many countries, nurseries produce in polybags filled excavated soil. These often develop deformed roots limited fibrosity which lead to poor after outplanting. Polybags are initially inexpensive but using these single-use plastic containers accrues expenses untracked. Comparisons among systems must account factors such as longevity, labor efficiency, seedling field performance. A more holistic approach environmental, economic, social, logistic, cultural elements cost–benefit equation influences needed. Converting a modern system requires concomitant adjustments scheduling culturing matched new stock type. Doing so provides an opportunity align techniques resulting anticipated conditions. This article describes discusses advantages disadvantages recommendations case studies aid improving quality toward cost-effective timely manner.

The genetic diversity, quality and suitability of seeds planting stock is crucial for the short long-term resilience restored forest landscapes. However, these aspects are widely neglected during both planning implementation restoration. Decisions on seed sourcing landscape restoration (FLR) initiatives often prioritize short-term cost savings over benefits. Such considerations result in strategies that favor rapid cheap mass production homogeneous plants and, thus, quantity quality, with no regard diversity. This paper explores detail economic improved integration diversity into projects tests assumption benefits accruing from better exceed costs. Using a bottom-up model, based peer reviewed scientific literature, we analyse different FLR drivers, integrating relation to total costs range tree-based interventions, focus sourcing, tree species selection. results indicate management increased incurred at beginning specifically These additional were largely due effort collection genetically diverse suitably adapted lots. despite this initial increase overall decreased substantially, relating replacement replanting. Seed germination directly influences seeding survival. Phylogenetically related species often exhibit similar traits; however, several environmental factors also play important roles in determining germination. In this study, we tested inter-specific variability seeds and investigated relations between responses, seed morphology, phylogenetic relatedness 9 of Polygonaceae. dimensions (length, width, height) were examined using a Stereo Microscope equipped with microscope camera. Water permeability was assessed by measuring the mass three replicates 25 seeds. Seeds at five different alternating temperature regimes: 5/10, 10/20, 20/30, 25/35, 35/40 °C under two conditions: 24 h darkness (dark treatment) 12 light/12 (light light regimes. The findings highlighted significant differences water uptake, behavior. Some exhibited physiological dormancy while other responded readily to temperature. size positively correlated performance, morphology distance matrix not distances. These suggest that phylogeny is an factor role traits, cues more intense evolution traits
