ABSTRACT
Tight
junctions
(TJs)
are
specialized
regions
of
contact
between
cells
epithelial
and
endothelial
tissues
that
form
selective
semipermeable
paracellular
barriers
establish
maintain
body
compartments
with
different
fluid
compositions.
As
such,
the
formation
TJs
represents
a
critical
step
in
metazoan
evolution,
allowing
multicompartmental
organisms

barrier-forming
epithelia
endothelia.

been

Inflammatory
bowel
diseases
(IBDs)
are
characterized
by
acute
or
chronic
recurring
inflammation
of
the
intestinal
mucosa,
often

increasing
severity
over
time.
Life-long
morbidities
and

quality
life
for
IBD
patients
compel
a
search
better
understanding
molecular
contributors
to
disease
progression.
One
unifying
feature
IBDs
is
failure

barrier,

tight
junctions.
In

review,
claudin
family
junction
proteins
discussed
as
they
fundamental
component
barriers.
