Marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important component of the global carbon cycle, yet its intricate composition and sea salt matrix pose major challenges for chemical analysis. We introduce a direct injection, reversed-phase liquid chromatography ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry approach to analyze marine DOM without need solid-phase extraction. Effective separation achieved with large chromatographic column extended isocratic aqueous step. Postcolumn dilution sample flow buffer-free solvents implementing counter gradient reduced buildup in ion source resulted excellent repeatability. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leached from two types of microplastics (polyethylene and polypropylene) frequently found in coastal areas were evaluated situ. Abstract Microbial functional ecology is expanding as we can now measure the traits of wild microbes that affect ecosystem functioning. Here, review techniques and advances could be bedrock for a unified framework to study microbial functions. These include our newfound access environmental genomes, collections traits, but also ability microbes’ distribution expression. We then explore technical, ecological, evolutionary processes explain patterns diversity redundancy. Bacterioplankton play a central role in carbon cycling, yet their relative contributions to production and removal can be difficult constrain. As part of the Export Processes Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) program, this study identifies potential influences bacterioplankton community dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition on cycling at Station Papa August 2018. Surface (5–35 m) rates stocks spanned 2- 3-fold range over 3-week cruise correlated positively with DOM degradation state, estimated using mole proportion total amino acids. When was more degraded, 16S rRNA gene amplicon data revealed less diverse significant contribution members Flavobacteriaceae family. Over course 7–10 d, as quality improved (became degraded) productivity increased, responding became diverse, increased SAR86, SAR11 AEGEAN-169 clades. The mean for mixed layer, depth-integrated demand (gross production) 5.2 mmol C m−2 d−1, representing 60% net primary production, where difference between than sinking flux 50 m. concentrations (cruise average 58.5 µM C) did not exhibit systematic change period. Global oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) often reach hypoxia but seldom anoxia. Recently it was reported that Michaelis Menten constants (Km) of oxidative enzymes are orders magnitude higher than respiratory Km values, and in the Hypoxic Barrier Hypothesis proposed that, ecosystems experiencing falling oxygen, oxygenase enzyme activities become oxygen-limited long before respiration. We conducted a mesocosm experiment with phytoplankton bloom as an organic carbon source controlled dissolved (DO) concentrations dark to determine whether slows oxidation decline. Total utilization (TOU) hypoxic treatment (ca. 7.1 µM O2) 21.7% lower oxic 245.1 over first 43 days experiment. In addition, following restoration fully conditions treatment, TOU accelerated, demonstrating processes sensitive DO found large volumes ocean.
