Multiple recalls and outbreaks involving Listeria monocytogenes-contaminated apples have been linked to the post-harvest packing environment where this pathogen can persist in biofilms. Therefore, study assessed L. monocytogenes survival on as affected by harvest year, apple cultivar, storage atmosphere, growth conditions. Unwaxed Gala, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp were dip-inoculated an 8-strain cocktail of planktonic- or biofilm-grown cells (~6.5 log CFU/mL), dried, then examined for numbers during air controlled atmosphere (CA) (1.5% O2, 1.5% CO2) at 2 °C. After 90 days, CA yielded similar (p > 0.05), regardless year. Populations gradually decreased with quantifiable most samples after 7 months. Apple cultivar significantly impacted < 0.05) both years greater reductions seen Gala compared Smith Honeycrisp. Biofilm-derived survived longer monocytogenes-inoculated grown planktonically. These findings should aid development improved intervention strategies growers packers.

Abstract Listeria monocytogenes (in the meat, fish and seafood, dairy fruit vegetable sectors), Salmonella enterica feed, egg low moisture food sectors) Cronobacter sakazakii sector) were identified as bacterial safety hazards most relevant to public health that are associated with persistence in feed processing environment (FFPE). There is a wide range of subtypes these involved FFPE. While some specific more commonly reported persistent, it currently not possible identify universal markers (i.e. genetic determinants) for this trait. Common risk factors FFPE inadequate zoning hygiene barriers; lack hygienic design equipment machines; cleaning disinfection. A well-designed environmental sampling testing programme effective strategy contamination sources detect potentially persistent hazards. The establishment barriers measures within management system, during implementation hazard analysis critical control points, key prevent and/or Once suspected plant, 'seek-and-destroy' approach frequently recommended, including intensified monitoring, introduction continuation monitoring. Successful actions triggered by L. described, well interventions direct bactericidal activity. These could be efficient if properly validated, correctly applied verified under industrial conditions. Perspectives provided performing assessment combinations sector assess relative can persistence, based on bottom-up top-down approaches. Knowledge gaps related priorities future research provided.

Biofilms are a critical factor for food safety, causing important economic losses. Among the novel strategies controlling biofilms, essential oils (EOs) can represent an environmentally friendly approach, able to act both on early and mature stages of biofilm formation. This review reports anti-biofilm mechanisms action EOs against five pathogenic bacterial species known their biofilm-forming ability. These include disturbing expression genes related quorum sensing (QS), motility, adhesion, virulence. QS interconnected processes, interfere with communication system (e.g. regulating agrBDCA, luxR, luxS, pqsA genes), thus influencing In addition, is mechanism that regulates gene survival, virulence, pathogenicity. Similarly, also influence many virulence genes. Moreover, exert effects modulating associated adhesion example those involved in curli (csg), fimbriae (fim, lpf), flagella (fla, fli, flh, mot) production, as well ica responsible synthetizing polysaccharide intercellular adhesin. provides comprehensive framework topic better understanding action.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe illness in individuals with weakened immune systems. In March 2023, L. was isolated from blood (n = 2) or pleural fluid 1) of three febrile patients receiving synthetic glucocorticoids a tertiary hospital Germany. Food supply records suggested sliced parboiled sausage as the likely source, and four samples sealed packaged sausages ham one manufacturer. The patient food isolates clustered within 0–4 allelic differences. Counts all were < 100 colony-forming units (CFU)/g, threshold European Union legislation for ready-to-eat products specific conditions. Our findings, aligned previous evidence, highlight that persons systems should not be exposed to food. We advocate clear communication deli meats high-risk foods, so adjust their diet reduce risk invasive listeriosis. recommend an update dietary hygiene guidelines care settings private homes where is prepared, handled stored

Listeria monocytogenes is an intracellular, Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-encapsulated, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped, and psychrotrophic food-borne pathogen that causes the infection, listeriosis, thus it attracts great attention following listeriosis outbreaks, which are often associated with high mortality rates. The prevalence of quite low globally; however, most recent deadliest outbreak occurred in South Africa, during 216 persons lost their lives. L. endowed potential to multiply through a wide range harsh environmental conditions, forming biofilms on varying surfaces food industry, as well having persistent antibiotic-resistant cells, pose major threat burden ready-to-eat industry. A more frustrating characteristic this bacterium its strain divergence, alongside increased level antibiotic resistance registered among strains recovered from food, humans, sources, especially those antibiotics involved treatment human listeriosis. The establishment of Listeria (L.) monocytogenes within food processing environments constitutes a significant public health concern. The presence of microbial pathogens in foods compromises their safety resulting foodborne illnesses, public health disorders, product recalls, and economic losses. In this work, 60 samples chilled raw chicken meat 40 packaged ready-to-eat (RTE) fresh leafy greens salads, sold Greek retail stores (butchers supermarkets), were analyzed for the three important pathogenic bacteria, i.e., Campylobacter spp., Salmonella Listeria monocytogenes, following detection protocols International Organization Standardization (ISO). parallel, total aerobic plate count (APC), Enterobacteriaceae, coliforms, Escherichia coli, staphylococci also enumerated as hygiene (safety) indicator organisms. When present, representative typical colonies each pathogen biochemically verified, ISO guidelines. At same time, all isolates from (n = 120) identified to species level further phylogenetically discriminated through multiplex repetitive sequence-based (rep) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods, respectively. Concerning chicken, spp. recovered 54 (90.0%) 9 (15.0%), while L. monocytogenes was present 35 (58.3%). No only one sample (2.5%), salads found be contaminated with (7.5%). 65% belonged C. jejuni, whereas rest, 35%, coli. Alarmingly, APC equal or above 106 CFU/g 53.3% 95.0% salad samples, respectively, populations some other indicators cases high. sum, study unravels high occurrence percentages food microorganisms RTE retail, highlighting need more extensive microbiological control throughout production (from farm/field market).
