Lighting is a fundamental driver of plant productivity in controlled-environment agriculture (CEA), directly affecting physiological processes, resource efficiency, and sustainability. This study evaluates the effects distinct lighting systems, industrial Light-Emitting Diodes (iLEDs), horticultural LEDs (hLEDs), high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, controls (no supplemental light), each providing unique light spectra, on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) growth, physiology, environmental impact under controlled intensity 250 µmol m−2 s−1 commercial CEA setup. The results indicated that iLEDs enhance intrinsic water use efficiency (35.65 CO2/mol H2O) reduce transpiration, reflecting superior use. Electrophysiological measurements significantly more stable stress responses plants subjected to hLEDs as compared HPS control treatments, indicating effectiveness LED spectra mitigating stress-related impacts. Furthermore, compact growth shorter stem internodes were observed well hLEDs, highlighting spectral photomorphogenesis, likely caused by balanced spectrum. achieved highest yield (42.86 kg m−2) but at significant cost, with 342.65 CO2e emissions 204.29 for iLEDs, competitive 38.84 m−2. Abstract Despite the growing popularity of biostimulants among farmers, a major problem remains with their variable effects on individual species and varieties cultivated crops. Therefore, it is important to know how choose suitable product for given conditions while simultaneously considering varietal variability in crop cultivation. The goal this study highlight different reactions plants applied preparations within monitored representatives Capsicum genus, an emphasis intervarietal variability. experiments two one control variants occurred during seasons 2020 2022 Slovakia’s southwest region, characterized by European continental climate warm dry summers. We evaluated three productivity parameters: fresh fruit weight per variety, number fruits plant. Capsicum (chili pepper) is a widely popular and highly consumed fruit crop with beneficial secondary metabolites such as capsaicinoids, carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, among others. Interestingly, the metabolite profile dynamic function of biosynthetic enzymes, regulatory transcription factors, developmental stage, abiotic biotic environment, extraction methods. We propose active manipulable genetic, environmental, controls for modulation quality quantity desired in species. Specific genes Pun (AT3) AMT capsaicinoids pathway PSY, LCY, CCS carotenoid can be genetically engineered enhanced production respectively. Generally, increase ripening fruit; however, transcriptional regulators MYB, bHLH, ERF control extent accumulation specific tissues. Secondary metabolites of Capsicum spp. have biological activity, which can be modified by external factors as the amount incident light and soil water availability during crop growing, internal fruit ripeness level. Objective This study aimed to determine total phenolic content (TPC), flavonoid (TFC), lipophilic components, and antioxidant activities of Capsicum annuum L. varieties grown in Omo Nada, Jimma, Ethiopia. Methods Fresh, ripe fruits from three commonly cultivated C. – Mareko Fana, Kolesha, Gojeb were investigated. TPC TFC measured using Folin-Ciocalteu aluminum chloride colorimetry methods methanol chloroform extracts, expressed as mg gallic acid equivalents (mg GAE/g) quercetin QE/g), respectively. Lipophilic components identified n-hexane extracts gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Antioxidant assessed the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Results Methanol had highest across all varieties, with exhibiting values (TPC: 22.98 ± 0.08 GAE/g; TFC: 7.67 0.07 QE/g). GC-MS analysis 80 distinct compounds m-xylene p-xylene (6.68-16.82%), capsaicin (4.22-11.25%), dihydrocapsaicin (2.12-8.24%), vitamin E (5.32-14.72%) (24R)-stigmast-5 -en-3beta-ol (2.19-6.20%) being among major varieties. The DPPH assay revealed that strongest activity EC 50 0.40 0.04 mg/mL. Moreover, showed strong negative correlation ((r = −0.87). Conclusion especially Gojeb, exhibited high TPC, TFC, activity, highlighting its importance potential sources natural antioxidants food or pharmaceutical industries. Piquin pepper fruits, a semi-domesticated wild species highly valued in Mexico, currently face the threat of unsustainable harvesting practices that endanger species. For this reason, it is necessary to establish sustainable agricultural for cultivation these peppers. Solar radiation, critical determinant crop production, plays crucial role plant development, influencing spectrum physiological and morphological processes, including synthesis phytochemicals. Our study evaluated effect light manipulation through colored shading nets on phytochemical profile, antioxidant capacity, fruit quality piquin peppers at two maturation stages: immature mature (green red fruits). hypothesis posits treatments may induce changes fruits’ composition properties, as well quality. results indicate maturity stage have significant capsaicinoid carotenoid levels, with highest levels observed fruits. Notably, fruits grown under black resulted levels. Carotenoid were higher treatment during first cycle, while second blue showed elevated suggesting high irradiance conditions could reduce contents. Although no differences among green both exhibited total phenolic compounds production cycles.
