This study examined the feasibility of employing artificial intelligence (AI) for feedback provision on essay-based assignments in a UK Higher Education setting. Although critical role enhancing students’ learning experiences is widely recognised, resource limitations and large student numbers often hinder its quality timely delivery. Through in-depth interviews with four participants from university UK, this research investigated AI applications essay evaluation, utilising data 12 AI-generated essays their corresponding feedback. The aims are to evaluate tutors’ abilities discerning human essays, as well evaluating perspectives. Findings showed that assessors could detect certain characteristics consistent generation noted ethical concerns regarding deviations academic standards. Participants also acknowledged AI’s capacity swift delivery compared human. results help enhance our understanding affordances risks assessment feedback, particularly less explored assignments.

Background The use of ChatGPT among university students has gained a recent popularity. current study aimed to assess the factors driving attitude and usage as an example generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methods This cross-sectional was based on previously validated Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)-based survey instrument termed TAME-ChatGPT. self-administered e-survey distributed by emails for enrolled UAE universities during September–December 2023 using convenience-based approach. Assessment demographic academic variables, TAME-ChatGPT constructs’ roles conducted univariate followed multivariate analyses. Results final sample comprised 608 participants, 91.0% whom heard while 85.4% used before study. Univariate analysis indicated that positive associated with three constructs namely, lower perceived risks, anxiety, higher scores technology/social influence. For usage, being male, nationality, point grade average (GPA) well four usefulness, risks use, behavior/cognitive construct ease-of-use construct. In analysis, only explained variance towards (80.8%) its (76.9%). Conclusion findings is commonplace UAE. determinants included cognitive behavioral factors, ease determined These should be considered understanding motivators successful adoption genAI including education.

The processes underlying human cognition are often divided into System 1, which involves fast, intuitive thinking, and 2, slow, deliberate reasoning. Previously, large language models were criticized for lacking the deeper, more analytical capabilities of 2. In September 2024, OpenAI introduced o1 model series, designed to handle 2-like While OpenAI’s benchmarks promising, independent validation is still needed. this study, we tested o1-preview twice on Dutch ‘Mathematics B’ final exam. It scored a near-perfect 76 74 out points. For context, only 24 16,414 students in Netherlands achieved perfect score. By comparison, GPT-4o 66 62 76, well above students’ average 40.63 Neither had access exam figures. Since there was risk contamination (i.e., knowledge cutoff after published online), repeated procedure with new Mathematics B that date. results again indicated performed strongly (97.8th percentile), suggests not factor. We also show some variability output o1-preview, means sometimes ‘luck’ (the answer correct) or ‘bad luck’ has diverged something incorrect). demonstrate self-consistency approach, where prompts given most common selected, useful strategy identifying correct answer. concluded while series holds great potential, certain risks must be considered.

Abstract In this paper, we initially investigate the capabilities of GPT-3 5 and GPT-4 in solving college-level calculus problems, an essential segment mathematics that remains under-explored so far. Although improving upon earlier versions, attains approximately 65% accuracy for standard problems decreases to 20% competition-like scenarios. Overall, models prove be unreliable due common arithmetic errors. Our primary contribution lies then examining use ChatGPT grading solutions exercises. objectives are probe in-context learning task with less emphasis over direct calculations; recognize positive applications educational contexts; highlight a potentially emerging facet AI could necessitate oversight; introduce unconventional benchmarks, which like GPT untrained. Pertaining latter, uncover tendency loss coherence extended contexts. findings suggest while current exhibits comprehension often provides relevant outputs, consistency is marred by occasional hallucinations. Intriguingly, GPT-4's overall scores, delivered mere moments, align closely human graders, although its detailed suboptimal. This work suggests that, when appropriately orchestrated, collaboration between graders LLMs might combine their unique strengths mitigating respective shortcomings direction, it imperative consider implementing transparency, fairness, appropriate regulations near future.
