In recent years, the antimicrobial activity of chitosan-based hydrogels has been at forefront research in wound healing and prevention medical device contamination. Anti-infective therapy is a serious challenge given increasing prevalence bacterial resistance to antibiotics as well their ability form biofilms. Unfortunately, hydrogel biocompatibility do not always meet demands biomedical applications. As result, development double-network could be solution these issues. This review discusses most techniques for creating with improved structural functional properties. The applications are also discussed terms tissue recovery after injuries, infection prevention, biofouling devices surfaces pharmaceutical

Hemorrhage is one of the greatest threats to life on battlefield, accounting for 50% total deaths. Nearly 86% combat deaths occur within first 30 min after wounding. While external wound injuries can be treated mostly using visual inspection, abdominal or internal hemorrhages are more challenging treat with regular hemostatic dressings because deep wounds and points injury that cannot located properly. The need trauma from limbs, abdomen, liver, stomach, colon, spleen, arterial, venous, and/or parenchymal hemorrhage accompanied by severe bleeding requires an immediate solution responders apply reduce rapid exsanguinations wounds, including in military operations. In recent years, bone tissue engineering (BTE), as a multidisciplinary field, has shown considerable promise in replacing traditional treatment modalities (i.e., autografts, allografts, and xenografts). Since is such complex dynamic structure, the construction of composite materials become an attractive strategy to guide growth regeneration. Chitosan its derivatives have been promising vehicles for BTE owing their unique physical chemical properties. With intrinsic physicochemical characteristics closeness extracellular matrix bones, chitosan-based scaffolds proved be candidate providing successful regeneration defect repair capacity. Advances produced efficient efficacious bio-properties via material structural design different modifications. Efforts put into modification chitosan overcome limitations, including insolubility water, faster depolymerization body, blood incompatibility. Herein, we discuss various methods that expand fields application, which would pave way future applied research biomedical innovation regenerative medicine.

This opinion-led review paper highlights the need for novel translational research in vital-pulp-treatment (VPT), but also discusses challenges translating evidence to clinics. Traditional dentistry is expensive, invasive and relies on an outmoded mechanical understanding of dental disease, rather than employing a biological perspective that harnesses cell activity regenerative-capacity. Recent has focussed developing minimally-invasive biologically-based 'fillings' preserve pulp; shifting paradigm from expensive high-technology dentistry, with high failure rates, smart restorations targeted at processes. Current VPTs promote repair by recruiting odontoblast-like cells material-dependent process. Therefore, exciting opportunities exist development next-generation biomaterials regenerative processes dentin-pulp complex. article analyses recent using pharmacological-inhibitors therapeutically-target histone-deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes dental-pulp-cells (DPCs) stimulate pro-regenerative effects limited loss viability. Consequently, HDAC-inhibitors have potential enhance biomaterial-driven tissue responses low concentration influencing cellular minimal side-effects, providing opportunity develop topically-placed, inexpensive bio-inductive pulp-capping material. Despite positive results, clinical translation these innovations requires enterprise counteract regulatory obstacles, dental-industry priorities strong academic/industry partnerships. The aim this discuss role therapeutically-targeting epigenetic modifications as part topical VPT strategy treatment damaged pulp, while considering next steps, material considerations, future therapeutics or other 'smart' VPT.

Effects of Clostridium butyricum and chitooligosaccharides (COS), singly in synbiotic combination, were evaluated a C57BL/6 mouse model dextran sulfate (DSS)-induced acute ulcerative colitis (UC). Treatment with C. and/or COS ameliorated UC symptoms vivo, the strongest effects observed for combination terms reduced mortality rates disease activity indices, increased body weight colon length, improved histological features. The achieved following: (i) regulated levels inflammation-related cytokines (tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α], interleukin-1β [IL-1β], IL-6, IL-10) had stronger anti-inflammatory effect than either component alone, based on inhibition Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4)/NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathway activation; (ii) enhanced intestinal barrier function by restoring tight junction proteins (occludin, claudin-1, ZO-1) MUC2; (iii) abundance diversity beneficial bacteria (gut microbiota) pathogenic bacteria; (iv) production short-chain fatty acids. Our findings indicate that has strong potential as therapeutic adjuvant UC. IMPORTANCE Ulcerative (UC), an idiopathic characterized continuous remission/relapse inflammatory cycles colonic mucosal layer, adverse patients' quality life considerable costs health care systems. Biomaterials are widely used for various medical purposes, instance, implants, tissue engineering, devices, and drug delivery systems. Natural biomaterials can be obtained from proteins, carbohydrates, cell-specific sources. However, when these introduced into the body, they trigger an immune response which may lead to rejection failure of implanted device or tissue. The system recognizes natural as foreign substances triggers activation several cells, macrophages, dendritic T cells. These cells release pro-inflammatory cytokines chemokines, recruit other implantation site. inflammatory response, beneficial detrimental, depending on type biomaterial extent response. also influence by modulating behavior For example, with specific surface properties, such charge hydrophobicity, affect differentiation Additionally, engineered immunomodulatory factors, anti-inflammatory cytokines, promote a tolerogenic In conclusion, interaction between body’s is intricate procedure potential consequences effectiveness therapeutics devices. A better understanding this interplay help design that favorable responses minimize adverse reactions.
