Several studies have documented that plastic pollution is affecting one of the most remote and pristine regions our planet, Antarctica. Plastics different size polymeric composition been retrieved in Antarctic sea ice, surface waters sediments, with microplastics (mostly fibers) found both terrestrial marine organisms. Such evidence raises concerns about potential detrimental effects on biodiversity ecosystem functions. The present review aims to report up-to-date knowledge occurrence distribution environment biota including interaction microorganisms, sources, its impact biota. Our understanding this polar region will help us define human footprint Antarctica predict future ecological risks.

To date, previous studies have reported the adverse effects of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) on both freshwater marine organisms. However, information MPs' NPs' shrimp species is scarce. In addition, factors influencing distribution these particles in aquatic systems been explained, yet mechanisms behind MPs NPs consumption, specifically to crustaceans shrimp, not elucidated detail. In recent years, micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) have represented an emerging threat for the aquatic environment due to their persistence widespread distribution. Indeed, small size increased surface area lead a high biological reactivity, which can be crucial health status of biota. To date, several studies investigated lethal sublethal endpoints MNPs, while one main challenges is understand mechanisms toxicity in comprehensive manner. With this aim, field ecotoxicology now benefit from -omics approaches. This review focuses on advances related use transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics deeply investigate molecular biochemical responses organisms, both fishes invertebrates, pristine polystyrene (PS) MNPs. The literature reviewed revealed that transcriptomics are most frequently used -omic Overall, taken into consideration shed light events triggered by PS MNPs at cellular levels, identifying as pathways involved oxidative stress, energy metabolism, immune response, nervous system. Future should therefore focus integration multi-omics approaches more understanding toxicity.

Plastic is undoubtedly the most useful and versatile polymeric material that man has developed in last two centuries Despite societal benefits, plastic now a serious global issue because it persistent may bioaccumulate into aquatic biota as microplastics (MPs). This study was designed to evaluate daily uptake cellular effects due short-term (up 72 h) exposure 3 μm red polystyrene MPs (50 beads/mL) gills of Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, chosen model species for its ecological commercial relevance. After measuring detecting their presence within branchial epithelium at all time-points (T24, T48, T72), some cleaning mechanisms were observed by neutral acid mucous secretions gills. The protonic Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR)-based metabolomics, combined with chemometrics, allowed comprehensively explore time-dependent metabolic disorders triggered over trial. Specifically, clear clustering between MP-treated those from control, together grouping experimental depicted Principal Component Analysis (PCA), changes amino acids energy metabolism, disturbances osmoregulatory processes, well cholinergic neurotransmission. Moreover, evidenced enzymatic assays, even oxidative defense systems lipid metabolism hampered MP exposure. Overall, these findings provides first insights early toxicity marine mussels, underline potential environment human health risk posed contamination.
