Microplastics pose a significant environmental threat, with potential implications for toxic chemical release, aquatic life endangerment, and human food chain contamination. In Asia, rapid economic growth coupled inadequate waste management has escalated plastic pollution in rivers, positioning them as focal points concern. Despite Asia's rivers being considered the most polluted plastics globally, scholarly attention to microplastics region's freshwater environments is recent development. This study undertakes systematic review of 228 articles map microplastic hotspots Asian systems synthesize current research trends within continent. Findings reveal concentration China Japan, primarily investigating riverine surface waters through net-based sampling methods. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) emerge predominant types, frequently observed fibers or fragments. However, diversity methodologies reporting metrics complicates data synthesis, underscoring need standardized analytical frameworks facilitate comparative analysis. paper delineates distribution outlines prevailing challenges prospects contexts.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a major global issue that poses serious threats to aquatic organisms. Although research on MP has been extensive, the relationship between MPs and water quality parameters in estuarine systems unclear. This work studied spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of Karnaphuli River estuary, Bangladesh. abundance was calculated by towing with plankton net (300 μm mesh size) at three river gradients (up-, mid- downstream) association physicochemical (temperature, pH, salinity, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, oxygen) patterns also investigated. Mean higher during wet season (April) (4.33 ± 2.45 items per m3) compared dry (September) (3.65 2.54 m3). In descending order, highest observed downstream (6.60 > midstream (3.15 upstream (2.22 pH temperature were key correlated (r = -0.74 0.74 respectively). Indicating if low or high temperature, there likely be present water. Most particles film-shaped, white color, 1-5 mm size. Of six polymers detected, polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), cellulose predominant, comprising roughly 17-19% each. These results can used model transport freshwater ecosystem estuary Bangladesh help develop future mitigation strategies.

In an extensive exploration of microplastics within soil environments, our study aims to investigate the presence, spread, and ecological impact in soil, focusing on Makassar City, Indonesia. Using a Sinher binocular digital microscope, we visually examined samples Petri dishes, measuring microplastic sizes with Image-J software. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was also employed for additional identification analysis polymer compositions. Our research uncovered widespread presence across diverse types land uses, including residential, fishpond, agricultural, landfill, coastal, bareland areas. The concentration these found be between 16.6 21.9 particles/gram, showing consistency most some variations coastal We noted significant variety forms, predominantly fragments films, different uses. A wide range colors observed, blue, green, red, transparent. Polyethylene (PE) polypropylene (PP) were identified as predominant polymers. highlights non-uniform distribution suggesting potential impacts organisms wider ecosystem. These findings underscore critical need more comprehensive implications environments. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-2024-010-04-017 Full Text: PDF
