Different regions of the striatum regulate different types behavior. However, how dopamine signals differ across striatal and regulates behaviors remain unclear. Here, we compared axon activity in ventral, dorsomedial, dorsolateral striatum, while mice performed a perceptual value-based decision task. Surprisingly, was similar all three areas. At glance, multiplexed variables such as stimulus-associated values, confidence, reward feedback at phases Our modeling demonstrates, however, that these modulations can be inclusively explained by moment-by-moment changes expected reward, is temporal difference error. A major between areas overall level responses: responses were positively shifted, lacking inhibitory to negative prediction errors. The differences put specific constraints on properties controlled regions.

Multiple neuromodulators including acetylcholine, noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin are released in response to uncertainty focus attention on events where the predicted outcome does not match observed reality. In these situations, internal representations need be updated, a process that requires long-term synaptic plasticity. Through variety of common divergent mechanisms, it is recently shown all facilitate induction and/or expression plasticity within hippocampus. Under physiological conditions, this may critical for suprathreshold endowing with gating function providing mechanism by which enable targeted updating memory relevant information improve accuracy future predictions.

The specific role of serotonin and its interplay with dopamine (DA) in adaptive, reward guided behavior as well drug dependance, still remains elusive. Recently, novel methods allowed cell type anatomical, functional interventional analyses serotonergic dopaminergic circuits, promising significant advancement understanding their roles. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognized that co-release neurotransmitters functionally relevant, which required order to interpret results pharmacological studies relationship neural recordings. Abstract The neuromodulator serotonin (5-HT) has been implicated in a variety of functions that involve patience or impulse control. Many these effects are consistent with long-standing theory 5-HT promotes behavioral inhibition, motivational bias favoring passive over active behaviors. To further test this idea, we studied the impact probabilistic foraging task, which mice must learn statistics environment and infer when to leave depleted site for next. Critically, were required actively nose-poke order exploit given site. We show optogenetic activation neurons dorsal raphe nucleus increases willingness attempt reward before giving up. These results indicate inhibition is not an adequate description function suggest unified account be based on higher-order function.

We found that activating dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) induced a strong suppression spontaneous locomotor behavior open field rapid kinetics (onset ≤1 s). Abstract Progress in determining the precise organization and function of claustrum (CLA) has been hindered by difficulty reliably targeting these neurons. To overcome this, we used a projection‐based strategy to selectively label CLA principal Combined with adeno‐associated virus (AAV) monosynaptic rabies tracing techniques, systematically examined pre‐synaptic input axonal output this structure. We found that neurons projecting retrosplenial cortex (RSP) collateralize extensively innervate variety higher‐order cortical regions. No subcortical labeling was found, exception sparse terminals basolateral amygdala (BLA). This pattern similar cingulate‐ visual cortex‐projecting neurons, suggesting common scheme among projection‐defined populations. Rabies directly demonstrated widespread synaptic inputs RSP‐projecting from both areas. The strongest arose classically defined limbic regions, including medial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate, BLA, ventral hippocampus, neuromodulatory systems such as dorsal raphe cholinergic basal forebrain. These results suggest may integrate information related emotional salience stimuli globally modulate state broadcasting its uniformly across higher cognitive centers.
