It remains unclear how memory engrams are altered by experience, such as new learning, to cause forgetting. Here, we report that short-term aversive in Drosophila is encoded and retrieved from the mushroom body output neuron MBOn-γ2α′1. Pairing an odor with electric shock creates a robust depression calcium response of MBOn-γ2α′1 increases avoidance paired odor. Electric after which activates cognate dopamine DAn-γ2α′1, restores properties causes behavioral Conditioning second responses previously learned while depressing newly odor, showing learning forgetting can occur simultaneously. Moreover, optogenetic activation DAn-γ2α′1 sufficient for bidirectional modulation properties. Thus, single DAn drive both bidirectionally modulating cellular trace.

Abstract The central complex, a set of neuropils in the center insect brain, plays crucial role spatial aspects sensory integration and motor control. Stereotyped neurons interconnect these with one another accessory structures. We screened over 5,000 Drosophila melanogaster GAL4 lines for expression two neuropils, noduli (NO) complex asymmetrical body (AB), used multicolor stochastic labeling to analyze morphology, polarity, organization individual cells subset that showed neuropils. identified nine NO three AB cell types describe them here. morphology suggests they receive input primarily lateral lobe send output each six paired noduli. demonstrate is bilateral structure which exhibits asymmetry size between left right bodies. show directly connect target both ABs, type preferentially innervates AB. propose be considered neuropil . Finally, we present highly restricted most protocerebral bridge, NO, types. These lines, generated using split‐GAL4 method, will facilitate anatomical studies, behavioral assays, physiological experiments.
