ABSTRACT Objective: To characterize the perceptions and feelings of parents diagnosed with cancer in relation to communication their children between 3 12 years old. Method: A cross-sectional, multicenter, data triangulation, through structured semi-structured interviews, a question Semantic Differential Scale, carried out father or mother undergoing outpatient treatment two hospital institutions city São Paulo, Brazil. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, content analysis, ATLAS.ti 8.0R software Social Representation Theory. Results: Forty-three respondents participated, 37 (86.0%) female, 23 (53.5%) aged 31 50 old, 29 (67.5%) only 7 The experience was considered painful (73.1%), stressful (53.6%), clear (53.7%) safe (51.2%). experienced generated categories: Trial by fire; Grateful rewards. Children’s reactions from parents’ perspective Sadness suffering; Trust support; Change behavior; Denial insensitivity. Conclusion: Communication assessed as negative conflicting, positive welcoming, causing changes children’s behaviors.
