Hydrothermal conversion of biomass

This thesis presents research of hydrothermal conversion biomass (HTC). In this process, hot compressed water (subcritical water) is used as the reaction medium. Therefore technique suitable for wet biomass/ waste streams. By working at high pressures, evaporation and energy consumption that it requires can be avoided. The main focus work was HTC process aiming production transportation fuel intermediates. For study, a new experimental using quartz capillary batch reactors has been developed, allowing determination yields gas, liquid solid products, their subsequent analysis. study performed glucose, model compound, complex feedstocks, wood pyrolysis oil. Important features have studied such as, undesired char formation, deoxygenation, mechanism kinetics formation different lumped product classes. Special attention also given to products initial glucose decomposition formation. Complete mass elemental balances obtained in significantly complement literature findings on HTC. Two distinct mechanisms are identified two deoxygenation (dehydration decarboxylation) discussed. observed trends rates obtain an engineering which adapted use with feedstocks. Finally, bench scale continuous reactor setup proposed several tested separately cold-flow, feeding slurries piston autoclave lifting fluidized bed, heat transfer, fluid bed operation state mixing phases operations.
