The remedial conservation of cultural heritage requires advanced functional materials that span from soft matter to nanostructured formulations, whose study is relevant different fields, ranging cosmetics and detergency tissue engineering. In the vast landscape innovative developed counteract artwork degradation, gels have emerged as ideal candidates for cleaning delicate complex surfaces. More specifically, twin-chain networks (TCNs), i.e., sponge-like hydrogels obtained through spontaneous polymer-polymer phase separation sustainable freeze-thawing, showed unprecedented performances on modern/contemporary iconic paintings, such works by Jackson Pollock Pablo Picasso. key their efficacy lies in mechanism at gel-substrate interface. Recent findings suggest pore size connectivity, affecting nanoscale tortuosity, play a crucial role determining gels' uptake (cleaning) ability. Nonetheless, diffusion soil gel only part processes control removal unwanted layers painted A deeper understanding studying solid particulate matter: adhesion surface roughness affect performance gel. this work, TCNs with modulated porosity, mixing poly(vinyl alcohol)s (PVAs) hydrolysis degrees molecular weights, were characterized techniques (confocal laser scanning microscopy, electron differential calorimetry, rheology) relate porosity structural features diffusional properties gels. Finally, tests model surfaces revealed clear connection between inhomogeneity
