Abstract Fluid and crystallized intelligence are acknowledged as distinct facets of cognitive ability during brain development, but the specific neural substrates molecular mechanisms underlying them remain unclear. This study used a sample comprising 7471 young adolescents (mean age 9.87 ± 0.62 years) from ABCD cohort to elucidate differential correlates fluid intelligence. Our findings indicated that micro-level MRI phenotypes such water diffusivity were closely associated with intelligence, whereas macro-level gray matter cortical thickness indicative We further investigated by correlating characteristic markers spatial transcriptome profiles PET imaging. Results showed had significant associations serotonin glutamate system, while was related serotonin, dopamine acetylcholine system. Furthermore, we examined impacts lifestyle factors on these two forms how pathways mediated impacts. investigation suggested physical activities, screen use sleep duration influenced mainly through mGlu5 receptors 5HT1a D2 receptors. In conclusion, illustrated basis between perspectives neuroimaging, neurotransmitters, lifestyles in adolescents.

Abstract The rise of new media has greatly changed the lifestyles, leading to increased time on these platforms and less spent reading. This shift particularly profound impacts early adolescents, who are in a critical stage brain development. Previous studies have found associations between screen use mental health, but it remains unclear whether is direct cause outcomes. Here, Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) dataset utlized examine causal relationships results revealed adverse effects language ability specific behaviors while reading positive their volume frontal temporal regions. Interestingly, identified as result, rather than cause, certain such rule‐breaking aggressive behaviors. Furthermore, analysis uncovered an indirect influence use, mediated by changes habits, These findings provide evidence for influences development highlight importance monitoring related habit change children.

Introduction Screen time can have important ramifications for children's development and health. Children exposed to greater screen score lower on assessments of language tend sleep less. However, most studies examining associations among time, development, quality focused older children and/or relied subjective exposure (i.e., parent report). The current study examined whether exposure, assessed via both maternal-report questionnaires in-home audio recordings, was associated with differences in infants at ~6 months age ( N = 187). Methods Mothers completed assess infant production, quality, as well family socioeconomic demographic factors. Language Environment Analysis (LENA) recorder used measure home use the environment. Results Higher income higher maternal education were less by report LENA recordings. Neither significantly environment, maternally-reported or quality. Maternally-reported showed a small but significant positive correlation LENA-derived exposure. Discussion We find no detectable association between maternally reported first 6 life. Future will be needed examine subsequent health outcomes.

Abstract While the brain continues to develop during adolescence, such development may depend on sex-at-birth. However, elucidation of differences be hindered by analytical decisions (e.g., covariate selection address body/brain-size differences) and typical reporting cross-sectional data. To further evaluate adolescent cortical development, we analyzed data from Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study SM , whose cohort 11,000+ youth participants with biannual neuroimaging collection can facilitate understanding neuroanatomical change a critical developmental window. Doubly considering individual in context group-level effects, regional changes thickness, sulcal depth, surface area, volume between two timepoints (∼2 years apart) 9-to 12-year-olds assigned male or female First, conducted linear mixed-effects models gauge how controlling for intracranial volume, whole-brain (WBV), summary metric mean thickness) influenced interpretations age-dependent change. Next, evaluated relative thickness area as function sex-at-birth age. Here, showed that WBV (thickness, volume) total were more optimal covariates; different covariates would have substantially altered our overall sex-at-birth-specific development. Further, provided evidence suggest aggregate is changing generally comparable across those sex-at-birth, corresponding happening at slightly older ages Overall, these results help elucidate trajectories early adolescence. Abstract Since the birth of cognitive science, researchers have used reaction time and accuracy to measure ability. The initial use these two measures is probably a generalization from empiricism, but it also implies that most behavior has fundamental dimensions, namely processing speed (CPS) (CPA). In this study, we genomic-wide association studies (GWAS) data 14 traits show presence those factors revealed specific neurobiological basis underlying them. We found distinct neuroimaging signatures for CPS CPA white matter microstructures were predominantly associated with CPS, while cortical volumes preferably related CPA. identified bases (e.g. excitatory neurons) developmental periods (i.e. late infancy) not CPA, suggesting between function. Moreover, showed differential associations other health-related such as screen exposure sleep status, significant causal relationship psychiatric disorders major depressive disorder schizophrenia. Utilizing an independent cohort Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) uncovered contributions on development young adolescents. These findings various abilities, elucidated brain structural fingerprint genetic architecture hinted at complex interrelationship ability, lifestyle, mental health.
