Abstract Black phosphorus (BP) is rediscovered as a 2D layered material. Since its first isolation in 2014, BP has triggered tremendous interest the fields of condensed matter physics, chemistry, and materials science. Given unique puckered monolayer geometry, displays many unprecedented properties being explored for use numerous applications. The flexibility, large surface area, good electric conductivity make it promising electrode material electrochemical energy storage devices (EESDs). Here, experimental theoretical progress presented on basis preparation methods. structural physiochemical properties, air instability, passivation, EESD applications are discussed systemically. Specifically, latest research findings utilizing EESDs, such lithium‐ion batteries, supercapacitors, emerging technologies (lithium–sulfur magnesium‐ion sodium‐ion batteries), summarized. On current progress, few personal perspectives existing challenges future directions this developing field provided.
