Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 is known as one the most promising methods to produce valuable fuels and value-added compounds. To overcome selectivity efficiency downsides, various photocatalysts have been designed developed. This review discusses state-of-the-art in photo-conversion over graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based composites. The modification strategies improve photocatalytic activity g-C3N4 were classified into different categories discussed structural modifications, elemental doping, copolymerization, fabricating heterojunctions between other semiconductors, Z-scheme heterojunctions, noble metal/g-C3N4 photocatalysts, design ternary nanocomposites based on g-C3N4. Finally, perspectives future research works this field also outlined.

As a metal-free nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) photocatalyst, g-C3 N4 is available from scalable synthesis at low cost. Importantly, it can be readily functionalized to enhance photocatalytic activities. However, the use of -based photocatalysts for NRR has been questioned because elusive mechanism and involvement N defects. This work reports photocatalyst modified with cyano groups intercalated K+ (mCNN), possessing extended visible-light harvesting capacity superior activity (NH3 yield: 3.42 mmol g-1 h-1 ). Experimental theoretical studies suggest that -C≡N in mCNN regenerated through pathway analogous Mars van Krevelen process aid . The results confirm regeneration group not only enhances sustains catalytic cycle, but also stabilizes photocatalyst.
