Numerous studies highlight the significant negative externalities associated with meat consumption, necessitating a shift towards diets reduced intake. Given challenges in persuading individuals to reduce consumption their diet and low popularity of coercive policies, alternative proteins have been proposed as solution facilitate protein transition. This paper stresses risk that non-holistic analysis bear promoting suboptimal solutions, therefore need for multidimensional approach considering aspects such environmental performance, scalability, acceptability, animal welfare. For instance, food product exhibiting favourable performance but lacking scalability potential would likely minimal transformative impact on systems. Furthermore, supporting solutions generates an opportunity cost terms quantity reduced. Thus, it is crucial compare not only conventional also each other. In this analysis, plant-based meats single-cell emerge having greatest contributing sustainable Cultivated could contribute positively if finds unique market segment overcomes challenges. ABSTRACT Evidence regarding whether consumers view plant‐based meat alternatives (PBMAs) as substitutes for or complements to is mixed; however, the ultimate effect of increased demand PBMAs on poultry and livestock production depends this relationship. Existing elasticity estimates primarily come from stated‐preference discrete‐choice models, which assume all options are substitutes. This study employs a basket‐based choice experiment (BBCE) estimate own‐ cross‐price elasticities in food‐away‐from‐home consumption settings. The BBCE then used calibrate an equilibrium displacement model, links shifts supplies. Our findings indicate (1) there mix complementarity substitution between conventional PBMAs, (2) own‐price lies those premium (salmon ribeye steak) more affordable choices (burgers chicken breast), (3) lowering prices (or increasing consumers’ willingness‐to‐pay PBMAs) unlikely significantly impact production.
