Understanding the composition, structure and stability of larger synthetic molecules is crucial for their design, yet currently analytical tools commonly used do not always provide this information. In perspective, we show how ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS), in combination with tandem spectrometry, complementary techniques computational methods, can be to structurally characterize molecules, make predict new complexes, monitor disassembly processes determine stability. Using IM-MS, present an experimental framework analysis design complex molecular architectures such as (metallo)supramolecular cages, nanoclusters, interlocked rotaxanes, dendrimers, polymers host–guest complexes.

[2 + 2] Photocycloaddition reactions are powerful tools for synthetic chemistry. However, analysis of the head-to-head or head-to-tail conformation resulting cycloadducts is often challenging by conventional spectroscopic methods. Herein, we report coumarin and styrylpyrene cyclic ion-mobility tandem mass spectrometry (cIM-MS/MS) to characterize regioisomeric products this important class photoresponsive groups. Photodissociation (PD) collision-induced dissociation (CID) cycloadduct ions in gas phase gave similar photodissociation solution with regiospecific fragmentation core cyclobutane ring. The ion was observed be more stable than analog under CID conditions, reflecting impact different substituents on stability Exploiting difference isomers, mobility enabled CID-MS/MS applied successfully differentiate identify these isomers. developed method proved robust even complex molecular structures identification separation photocycloadducts from terminated peptides, providing access a rapid
