Hematite (α-Fe2O3)-based photoanodes offer great potential for use in solar hydrogen production as part of efforts to construct a sustainable and renewable energy economy based on photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. A co-doping modification is the utmost significance improving PEC performance. To develop an efficient photoanode, comprehensive grasp co-dopants with diverse valence states necessary. Herein, we describe hydrothermal dip-coating approach fabrication Hf-doped Fe2O3 (Hf-HT) co-doped Be2+, Al3+, Si4+, Nb5+ evaluate influence each co-dopant The characteristic results revealed that Be2+ Al3+ enhanced surface charge separation efficiency, thus accelerating transfers at photoanode–electrolyte interface. Meanwhile, performance Hf-HT photoanode Nb did not significantly improve because thick Nb2O5 overlayer. However, Si4+ improved bulk properties photoanode. An optimized Be achieved photocurrent density 1.98 mA/cm2 1.23 VRHE. This demonstrates ex situ can have both positive negative impacts activity photoelectrodes, used accomplish desired outcomes should be considered detail.
